Project Update

We are installing pedestrian crossings, traffic islands, and speed humps to improve safety on Toru Street, Te Atatu Peninsula. Work will take place between 31 January to 15 February 2026.

Here is what you need to know about the work happening near you:

Where

  • Intersection of Toru Street and Karamu Street, Te Atatu Peninsula near Rutherford Schools (see work location map below)

When

  • 31 January to 15 February 2026

What we’re doing

  • Installing of speed table, traffic islands, speed humps, new raised pedestrian crossings, and tactiles.

How it may impact you

  • Toru Street will be closed. If you live along this road, traffic controllers at either end of the road will help you access your property.
  • On-street parking will be limited during works. You may need to either park on your property or on a side road and walk to your property.
  • Works will create noise and vibration; we’ll do our best to keep noise levels down.

How travel is affected

  • Traffic on Toru Street will be managed with a Stop and Go sign system, please follow all signs.
  • Detours will be in place to redirect traffic around the work site (see detour map(s) below).
  • We expect a traffic delay of 10 minutes as a result of this work.
  • Alternative bus stops will be in place as some stops will be closed. Use the AT mobile app to receive notifications about changes to routes and stops near you.

Traffic controllers will be on site to assist around the work site. Please follow all signs, light signals and traffic directions.

Engagement Closed

The engagement period for the Rutherford Primary Innovating Streets project has now ended, with the feedback window closing on March 11. We appreciate the input received and the support from local schools and stakeholders. We’ll now move forward with the next phase of the project and will keep the community updated on construction timelines and progress.

About the project

The key goals of the Safe School Streets programme were to test temporary infrastructure improvements that support road safety around schools and encourage more active modes of transport to and from schools with the increased level of safety.

From November 2019, interim changes were made to the streets around Rutherford Primary School and Rutherford College, and these changes were monitored and adjustments were made to the layout after feedback from the schools and community. Most of temporary infrastructure remained in place while we planned the permanent design and worked to secure funding for delivery. Most of the permanent changes have been built in 2021. We now have secured funding to build the last few improvements for Toru Street and Old Te Atatu Road.

This funding will allow us to build the permanent replacements for the crossing and speed bump on Toru Street and the kerb extensions on Old Te Atatu Road.

What happens next

We plan to install these changes in 2025. Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with local residents prior to any construction taking place.
