About the project

In 2021, we trialled measures outside Milford School with the aim to make the streets safer for school children as part of the Safe School Streets Programme.

Temporary changes were installed near the rear entrance of the school on Otakau Road and at the intersection to Fenwick Avenue. These included speed humps and a raised table on Fenwick Avenue, road narrowing and speed cushions on Otakau Road.

The key goals of the Safe School Streets Programme were to test temporary infrastructure improvements that support road safety around schools and encourage more active modes of transport to and from schools with the increased level of safety.

The results of the feedback received about the trial in April 2022 shaped the permanent measures we are planning to install soon to help reduce speeds and improve safety around the school.

The changes we're making

Here’s a breakdown of the permanent infrastructure we’ll be building over the temporary infrastructure:

Temporary change

Permanent replacement

Otakau Road

  • Drop off and pick up zone with purple painted kerb replacing on-street parking at 17-19 Otakau Road. The zone will operate from 8am – 9am and 2.30pm – 3.30pm. During these times, parking will not be available as the intention is for parents to pull in to safely pick-up or drop-off children at school.
  • Rubber speed cushion and road narrowing to slow speeds outside 15-17 and 16-18 Otakau Road.
  • Extending no stopping lines outside 2/5, 21, 24 and 26 Otakau Road

Otakau Road

  • Install a speed hump with side islands outside 15-17 and 16-18 Otakau Road to slow drivers to a safer speed
  • Re-allocate road space by removing one parking space outside 26 Otakau Road that will allow proper maneuvering for vehicles.

Fenwick Avenue

  • Raised crossing north of the intersection with Otakau Road.
  • A raised table Kea crossing at 10 Fenwick, south of the intersection with Otakau Road. A Kea crossing is only operational when operated with school patrol signs.

Fenwick Avenue

  • Install a speed hump outside 1A Fenwick Avenue to slow drivers to a safer speed
  • Install a raised table crossing near the intersection of Otakau Road and Fenwick Avenue so it's level with the footpath to slow drivers on approach and ensure people crossing can be easily seen by motorists

Drawings on the right-hand side of this webpage show where the changes will be installed.

What happens next

We plan to install these changes in 2025.

Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.

How to contact us

If you’d like to contact us about our plans, please email us before 24 March 2025 at ATengagement@at.govt.nz(External link)
