Māngere East – Safer Streets Are Here to Stay

Permanent improvements starting late 2025

Kia ora, tālofa lava, mālō e lelei, kia orana, fakaalofa lahi atu, bula vinaka, nǐ hǎo, namaste, kumusta, néih hóu, and warm greetings.

In 2021, Auckland Transport partnered with the Māngere East community to trial a series of pop-up street improvements designed to make local streets safer, calmer, and more welcoming.

Thank you for sharing your feedback and local insights during the trial in 2021. Based on what we heard and observed, we are pleased to confirm that these changes will now be made permanent, with construction expected to start in late 2025.

About the project

Temporary pop-up street improvements trialled since 2021

The Māngere East Innovating Streets project aimed to:

  • Make it safer and easier for people to walk, bike, and cross the street.
  • Reflect the Māngere East community’s identity through street design, planting, and public artwork.
  • Create welcoming, people-focused spaces for everyone to enjoy.
  • Use a "tactical urbanism" approach — trialling low-cost changes first to test what works before making long-term investments.

The project was shaped by partnerships with ME Family Services, local kura, churches, and community members. Temporary materials were used to allow the community to experience the changes and provide feedback before permanent decisions were made.

Key trial results

The 2021 trial showed positive outcomes, including:

  • Traffic speeds dropped by up to 29 km/h in treated areas.
  • Traffic volumes decreased by up to 25% on some streets.
  • Safer pedestrian behaviour and easier crossings, especially for tamariki (kids) and elderly people.
  • Strong community support for public spaces, planter boxes, and artwork.
  • Some feedback regarding speed hump steepness and material durability, which has informed the permanent designs.

What’s changing

From late 2025, Auckland Transport will permanently upgrade the temporary trial features.

Improvements include:

  • Upgrading existing speed humps
  • Upgrading existing raised pedestrian crossings to provide safer, more visible crossings
  • Installing new kerb build-outs to reduce turning speeds and shorten crossing distances
  • Improving pram crossings to make footpaths more accessible
  • Installing tactile pavers — yellow guidance markers to assist vision-impaired pedestrians
  • Refreshing road markings and signage for better visibility and safety
  • Upgrading footpaths and kerbs in key areas
  • Removing a small number of parking spaces to allow for safer street layouts

Where the work is happening

The permanent improvements will be delivered along:

  • Yates Road
  • Ferguson Street
  • Royton Avenue
  • Parts of Chalfont Street and Chadwick Crescent
