About the projects

Manurewa Station is an important gateway for South Aucklanders to the city centre. It's also a key driver of economic activity in Manurewa, with many businesses, offices, and freight routes nearby. Thousands of Aucklanders a day travel to and around the train station to work, for school, to shop or for events and entertainment.

We've identified some changes we can make at two busy intersections around Manurewa Station - Great South Road at Mahia Road and Great South Road at Alfriston Road / Weymouth Road - that will create better, more reliable journeys for people travelling to and around the station. These changes can be delivered quickly, at relatively low cost and with minimal disruption to the community.

The changes we're planning

At Great South Road / Mahia Road intersection

The changes we're making at this intersection will help ease congestion and delays by creating more room for traffic to move and ensuring parked cars can't create bottlenecks for traffic approaching the intersection from Great South Road at the busiest times of day. They are:

Creating more lane space for vehicles approaching the intersection on Great South Road from the south. We'll do this by removing a portion of the median road markings (roughly between properties 302 and 296) and replacing them with new lane markings. Afterwards, vehicles will have more room to queue at the intersection, and more of them can pass through the intersection on green lights.

Installing a 4-6pm, Monday-Friday clearway on Great South Road between properties 302 and 298. This change will ensure parked cars aren't blocking traffic in the new lane space we're making at the busiest times of day. People will still be able to park in that space at all other times of day and anytime on weekends.

Please refer to the design drawings on this webpage to see exactly where we're making the changes.

At Great South Road / Alfriston Road / Weymouth Road intersection

The changes we're making at this intersection will help ease congestion and delays by creating more room for traffic to move. We'll also be adding some features to create more room and better visibility for cyclists travelling through the intersection. They are:

Removing the bus lane road markings on Great South Road and replacing them with new lane markings. The bus lane in this area is no longer in use. By removing and replacing it with new lane markings, we'll create more lane space for all vehicles on Great South Road to move through the intersection.

Adding new advance stop boxes and cycle connector lanes on the Great South Road sides of the intersection. These features will help make cyclists travelling through the intersection more visible to motorists, and they'll have dedicated space to turn on and off the intersection from Great South Road.

Please refer to the design drawings on this webpage to see exactly where we're making the changes.

What happens next

We plan to implement these changes towards the end of June 2025.

Any change to our plans will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with local businesses and residents prior to any physical works taking place.
