About the project

We’re responding to safety concerns by the community to improve safety on Porana Road, Wairau Valley.

Porana Road is a busy road with a high volume of through traffic, including heavy vehicles. Right now, cars parking too close to driveways forcing larger vehicles to across the centre line of the road to turn into businesses. It can lead to collisions, increasing the risk of head-on or side-swipe crashes and is a danger to drivers and other road users. It also makes it harder for drivers trying to see when pulling in and out of driveways.

The changes we're making by January - February 2026

  • Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) outside Glenfield Auto Centre on 30 Porana Road. This clears access and improves visibility by preventing vehicles from parking at the entry and exit points of the driveway.
  • Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) outside 1 Silverfield on the Porana Road driveway. This clears access and improves visibility by preventing vehicles from parking at the entry and exit points of the driveway.
  • Extend the medium strip from Silverfield to the entrance fo TaiPing Asian Supermarket (23-25 Porana Road) to improve traffic flow along this section of the road.

Benefits to your community

  • Clears congestion and ensures ease of access for all vehicles along this section of the road, including services like waste removal and emergency services.
  • Improves visibility for drivers to see oncoming cars, people walking, cycling and crossing the road, making it safer, particularly for tamariki (children).
  • Supports smoother, safer traffic flow throught these areas.

What happens next

  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
