About the Project
We're responding to safety concerns raised by residents by making improvements near the Hinemoa & Awanui Streets intersection in Birkenhead. We want to make it easier for everyone to get around safely, whether you’re walking, cycling, scooting, or driving.
Thanks to the Kaipātiki Local Board’s Capital Transport Fund, we’re now able to make improvements that help everyone feel safer and more confident when using the street.
The changes we're making
These changes include new road features that encourage safe driving and help highlight areas where people are likely to cross or move around, including:
Install two speed cushions outside property number 18, Hinemoa Terrance, for speed reduction.Speed cushions are small speed bumps placed in the middle of the road. Larger vehicles can pass without impact & smaller vehicles need to slow down.
Install traffic islands at the intersection of Hinemoa and Awanui Street to improve road outlining as shown on the drawings.
Install high-friction road surface on the southbound left lane near the bend on Hinemoa Street to reduce speed and improve skid resistance, especially in wet weather.
Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) to clear access by supporting bus entry and exit at the bus stops, and ensure visibility. And for bus users, we will need to reallocate road space by removing 7 parking spaces as follows:
Outside property numbers 28, 26, and 47
Outside Hinemoa Street & 1, 2, and 39 Awanui Street
Narrow the entrance from Hinemoa Terrace onto Hinemoa Street.
Install new signs and road markings to support these changes.
Benefits to your community
Safer journeys - The improvements help reduce the risk of crashes and make it safer for everyone using the street.
Better road outlining & access - It’s easier for buses and vehicles to get around the intersection and move through the area safely.
Safe vehicle access - Narrowing the entrance to Hinemoa Terracereduces the speed of the vehicles accessing and exiting the road.
Better access to public transport - clearing access around the bus stops and at the Hinemoa Street / Awanui Street intersection improves access to public transport and visibility at the request of local residents.
New road markings and signsclarify right of way, improve safety by minimising the risk of collisions, and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
What happens next
We will install these changes by October/November 2025
Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
We will be in touch with the local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
