About the project

We’re making changes to improve pedestrian safety on Graeme Avenue, in response to community concerns and poor driver behaviour.

These concerns include the narrow footpath outside Papatoetoe North School and cars parking on the grass berm and footpath during peak times. This creates risks for everyone, especially school children walking to and from school.

The changes we’re making

  • Widening the footpath outside the school, on the eastern side of Graeme Avenue, between the driveways of 11 and 29 Graeme Avenue.
  • Removing the unused bus stop outside 16 Graeme Avenue and increase parking by two standard parking spaces.
  • Removing the concrete bollards outside 17 and 19 Graeme Avenue and replacing them with a grass berm to help keep pedestrians and drivers safer.
  • Removing the concrete buckets outside 8 and 25 Graeme Avenue to help keep pedestrians and drivers safer.
  • Installing “No stopping off roadway signs along the western side of Graeme Avenue, between the corner with Hallberry Road (opposite 11 Graeme Avenue) and the driveways of 10 and 12 Graeme Avenue. This will stop cars from parking on the grass berm.

Benefits to your community:

  • Widening the footpath will make walking safer, easier, and better connected, especially for people who live further from the school’s main entrance. This also helps encourage parents to park further away from the school where parking is available.
  • “No stopping off roadway” signs are placed to discourage people parking on the berms and will allow AT to monitor and enforce this restriction. This will improve visibility as parked cars on the grass berm can block the view for both pedestrians and drivers reversing out of driveways.
  • Less damage to the grass and underground utilities, especially in wet weather.

This project is supported by the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board and is delivered by Auckland Transport on their behalf funded through the Local Board Transport Capital Fund.

What happens next

We will install these changes by January 2026.

Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with the local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
