Engagement Outcome

The engagement for this project has now closed and we will inform the community about the engagement outcome soon.

About the project

As part of our road safety programme, we are upgrading the approaches to the roundabout at Riverhead Road and Old North Road to make it safer for everyone. This intersection has a history of injury crashes, between 2020 and 2024, 4 crashes occurred within 50 metres of this roundabout, resulting in one serious and three minor injury crashes. Excessive entry speeds and poor visibility have been the contributing factors to these crashes. To help fix this, we are changing the shape of the northern and southern approaches to slow drivers down, which will make crashes less likely and less severe.

To make the roundabout safer we are:

  • Installing two new traffic islands on the road edge and realigning the existing traffic islands in the middle of Old North Road (on both sides of the roundabout).
  • Painting a flush median at the centre of the roundabout to further enhance traffic flow and safety.

What happens next:

  • Any updates to the plan will be posted on our website.
  • We are planning to make the changes in June 2026.
  • We will be in touch again before the work starts.

If you have any questions or comments on the planned changes, please email us at ATengagement@at.govt.nz (ref: Old North Road) by May 8, 2026. Or if there's anything we've missed, please leave us a comment in the box below and include your email address in your comment, if you'd like us to reply back to you.
