Our city centre is transforming. The City Rail Link is set to open in 2026 and will transform the way people travel to and around our city centre. With all the changes, we’re looking at how to make the best use of our kerbside spaces. They need to accommodate our diverse community needs, like deliveries, tradespeople, pedestrians, motorists, buses, and taxis.

Proposal for Nicholls Lane

Land use in the vicinity of Nicholls Lane is changing. There is more demand on these kerbside spaces. AT has identified the following improvements:

Outside Stuart McCutcheon House (Carlaw student apartments) on Nicholls Lane, we plan to remove some of the broken yellow lines and replace with paid parking and a loading zone.

The space will be divided into:

  • A new P5 general loading zone operating at all times. And
  • New paid parking that operates 8am-6pm (Mon-Sun). Outside these hours paid parking reverts to general parking.

Opposite Stuart McCutcheon House (Carlaw student apartments) on Nicholls Lane, extend the parking area towards Stanley Street and change the existing two-hour time restriction to paid parking.

  • New paid parking that operates 8am-6pm (Mon-Sun). Outside these hours paid parking reverts to general parking.

The shared vehicle space will remain with no changes.

Other proposals for the city centre

AT is currently developing a parking management plan for the City Centre. We have talked to City Centre stakeholders and interest groups to develop a series of kerbside (and other) change proposals.
