About the project

We received a request from the community to improve visibility and safety issues at both the roundabouts at Wainui Road, Manuel

Road and Colin Chester Drive, and also at Wainui Road, Watkinson Road and Ridgedale Road in Silverdale.

Cars parked on corners and on both sides of the road are narrowing the road lane to one way presenting a danger to drivers, cyclists and other road users. It makes it difficult for drivers to see oncoming cars, cyclists and people crossing the road. In addition, Colin Chester Drive is a road designed to serve heavy vehicles as it is in an industrial zone and current on-road parking is affecting access and visibility near the roundabout.

The changes we're making by August/ September 2025

No stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) will be painted on the entrances and exits of these roundabouts

  • Wainui Road, Manuel Road and Colin Chester Drive
  • Wainui Road, Watkinson Road and Ridgedale Road
  • No Stopping Off Roadway (no parking on berms) signs will be installed along Colin Chester Drive to prevent vehicles parking on the berm/grass
  • No stopping at all times (broken yellow line) will be painted on the cycle lane along Wainui Road to prevent vehicles from parking on the cycle lane.

Benefits to your community

  • Helps drivers see clearly at these busy roundabouts
  • Makes it safer for tamariki and others walking, cycling or crossing the road
  • Keeps access clear for rubbish trucks, emergency vehicles, and all other traffic
  • Supports smoother, safer traffic flow through these areas
  • Vehicles parked on the grass berm present visibility issues for people, street signs and sight lines at intersections
  • Parking on the berm is a danger to people on foot, as the cars obstruct them from view, and they can't be seen crossing roads or walking. It causes visibility issues for drivers reversing out of driveways and access issues for people who live here
  • Parking on the berm can damage underground utilities and the grass, especially in wet weather
  • These signs will remind drivers not to park on the grass berm, and these areas will be subject to enforcement.
  • No stopping at all times (broken yellow line) in the cycle lanes will help motorists avoid parking infringements by making it clear that this is a no parking area.

In good weather conditions, it will take one day to paint the broken yellow lines. We know this may cause an inconvenience, and we’ve tried to minimise this as much as possible.

We remind all drivers to park correctly and avoid blocking driveways. Vehicles parked illegally may receive infringement notices or be towed away.

What happens next

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
