About the project

We’re making changes to the pedestrian crossing on Hunua Road, outside Edmund Hillary School to help tamariki and whānau cross the road more safely, especially during the busy drop-off and pick-up times.

At the moment, the pedestrian crossing can feel difficult to use because it’s hard for people crossing to be clearly seen, and the road is too wide to cross safely.

The changes we’re making

  • Shift the existing pedestrian crossing outside Edmund Hillary School to a new location slightly further south on Hunua Road.
  • Install new side islands at the new crossing.
  • Install high friction surfacing on the approaches to the pedestrian crossing.
  • Upgrade the street lights.
  • Install tactile ground surface indicators.
  • Install new school patrol facilities directly adjacent to the crossing.
  • These changes will result in the removal of 2 on-street parking spaces.

Benefits to the Community

  • A safer and more visible crossing point for pedestrians, especially school children.
  • Side islands reduce the crossing distance so people can cross more safely.
  • High friction surfacing enables drivers to slow down and stop for the crossing more quickly and safely.
  • New school patrol facilities directly next to the crossing mean the school patrol team will not have to carry the poles out each day.
  • Improved accessibility for people who are blind or have low vision
  • Better lighting to support safer travel to and from school during darker hours.
