We are responding to community feedback to include additional safety improvements in the Hobsonville Road Cycleway Project

We’re responding to community feedback about safety at the intersections of Trig Road and Brigham Creek Road with Hobsonville Road. Through engagement on the Hobsonville Road Cycleway project, the community highlighted the need for safety upgrades at these locations. The new signalised intersections will improve safety for everyone.

We also heard from the community that safer crossings on Hobsonville Road near Oreil Avenue, along with better walking and cycling connections to the yellow bridge would make it easier for people to walk and cycle.

The changes we’re making in Mid-2026

Brigham Creek Road /Hobsonville Road intersection

    • Installing new traffic lights and traffic islands to improve safety for motorists turning at the intersection
    • Installing a new separated footpath and off-road cycle path to help people walking and cycling move safely through the intersection
    • Installing traffic light-controlled crossing facilities to give priority to those who cross the road
    • Installing a paired crossing that includes a zebra crossing and a green cycle lane, to slow left turning‑ vehicles to Brigham Creek Road from Hobsonville Road, and give priority to people walking and cycling
    • Installing new road markings to clearly define lanes and improve efficiency for all road users

Trig Road / Hobsonville Road intersection

    • Installing new traffic lights and traffic islands to improve safety for motorists turning at the intersection
    • Installing sections of shared and separated footpath and off-road cycle path to help people walking and cycling move safely through the intersection
    • Installing traffic light-controlled crossing facilities to give priority to those who cross the road
    • Widening Trig Road approximately 180m from the intersection to add an extra lane that will allow vehicles to queue in left or right turning lanes to increase the efficiency of the light phases
    • Installing on-road concrete cycleway separators to link with new shared paths and make cycling safer near the intersection

Additional to the safety improvements at both of these intersections, traffic lights increase the efficiency of the traffic flow especially during peak times.

Oreil Avenue – Uphill protected cycleway and signalised paired crossing across Hobsonville Road

  • Installing a new traffic light-controlled paired crossing across Hobsonville Road east of the intersection of Oreil Avenue to provide a safe connection for people cycling, walking or catching the bus
  • Installing a cycleway with cycle lane separators on the western uphill side of Oreil Avenue, to provide safety for those cycling uphill, which is more challenging than downhill.
  • Installing two sets of speed cushions on Oreil Avenue, to reduce the speed of traffic
  • Installing a raised paired crossing near the lower intersection of St Catherine Crescent to provide safe crossing for people walking or on bikes

On the eastern “downhill” side of Oreil Avenue, no cycle facility is planned, as it is easier to travel downhill on a bike. This will also mean that we can retain space for on-street parking. The speed humps on Oreil Avenue will encourage safer speeds for drivers to make this a safer environment for all users.

Note that a paired crossing on a speed table, and a shared path connecting people to the new signalised crossing on Hobsonville Road shown in the drawing was already shared in earlier designs.

What happens next

  • Our teams will work on finalising the design
  • The construction will be included while the contractor is working on the cycleway
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website
