We’re changing the lane alignment on East Coast Road at the Hibiscus Coast Highway intersection. The changes will help keep traffic moving – whether you drive, catch the bus, or do both.

Currently, people travelling through this intersection experience delays, particularly when turning right from East Coast Road onto Hibiscus Coast Highway. There is less demand for the through and left-turn lanes at this location.

With the proposed lane changes, during the evening peak (4pm to 6pm), wait times for right-turning vehicles are expected to reduce by up to 4 minutes, and vehicle queue lengths are expected to reduce by up to 400 metres. Across the intersection, average delays are expected to reduce by around 40 seconds due to the improved signal timing.

The changes we’re planning:

On the East Coast Road approach to the intersection, all three lanes will now be able to turn right onto Hibiscus Coast Highway. Currently only two lanes can turn right, and the kerbside lane is only for the left turn slip lane on Hibiscus Coast Highway and through movements into Brian Smith Drive.

The current layout is: Left, Straight, Right, Right

The proposed lane layout will be: Left, Straight and Right, Right, Right

The merge on Hibiscus Coast Highway will be changed to make it easier for the two lanes to merge. Currently, the left-hand lane needs to change lanes into the center lane but now both lanes will merge like a zip.

The stop lines on the eastern side of the Hibiscus Coast Highway will be moved back slightly to make room for vehicles turning right from East Coast Road.

Changing the lane layout allows the signals to run more efficiently and helps vehicles move effectively through the intersection.
