About the project
We’re making changes to improve safety for people crossing Herd Road near the Parkside Retirement Village.
The community has raised concerns about pedestrian safety in this area. Herd Road is a busy street and is regularly used by elderly residents, Retirement Village staff, and people travelling to and from the nearby care hospital.
To make crossing the road safer, we’re proposing to connect the southern footpath with Queenstown Road, install a new crossing for residents and workers, and relocate the existing bus shelters to improve access to public transport and nearby amenities.
What we're planning in May/July 2026:
Install a new footpath and kerbs to connect the existing footpath outside #49 Herd Road to #42 Herd Road on the opposite side of the street.
Install a new raised zebra crossing and traffic islands outside #42 Herd Road to make it safer and easier for people to cross the road.
Install tactile pavers at the crossing to help people who are vision‑impaired.
Move the existing bus stops and add no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) to improve visibility for drivers and people crossing the road.
Bus stop #8969, located outside #42 Herd Road, will move slightly east.
Bus stop #8960, located near the Queenstown Road intersection, will move to outside #42 Herd Road, near the new crossing, to better meet pedestrian needs.
To keep sightlines clear and improve safety, we will reallocate road space and remove around 33 parking spaces.
Install new signs and road markings to support these changes.
Benefits to your community:
Makes it safer and easier for everyone to move around the neighbourhood and reach places like the retirement village, parks, and public transport.
Improved bus shelter locations make walking in the area easier and more comfortable.
Helps drivers slow down and be more aware of people crossing the road.
Creates a safer, more visible crossing so people can get around with confidence.
What happens next?
Any change to the plan and outcome for this propose will be updated on page.
We will be in touch with residents before any work takes place.
