About the project

We’ve heard concerns from Glendene residents regarding safety at the intersection of Harmel Road and Hepburn Road. To address these concerns, we're planning some improvements that will make walking and driving near the intersection safer for everyone.

This project is funded by the Whau Local Board.

The changes we’re making in January–February 2025:

  • Reconstructing the footpath and removing the current crossing island outside 115 & 118 Hepburn Road and relocating it to 2 Harmel Road & 114 Hepburn Road. It helps people crossing to safely wait for a gap in traffic (while giving way to motorists) to finish crossing the road.
  • New road signs and road markings (including painting the word SLOW on the road) to support the new crossing island closer to the intersection and digital speed indication signs.
  • Relocating the bus stop (Route #5540) from 114 Hepburn Road, to outside 116 Hepburn Road to make way for the new crossing island
  • Widening the footpath outside 114 & 116 Hepburn Road and on either side of the new crossing island, which gives more room to safely wait to cross and to wait for the bus

Benefits to your community

  • Improves safety for everyone walking or crossing the road and for speed reduction in the area
  • Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the intersection and improves visibility between motorists and people crossing the road and general surroundings at the intersection.
  • New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.

What happens next

We will install these changes in January-February 2025

Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
