Purpose of the project
We need to move the location of where buses park, to make space for more buses and to enable construction at the train station.
About the project
Aucklanders have told us they want more reliable and frequent public transport, and Auckland Transport (AT) is working to deliver this. As public transport services improve, particularly around Henderson Station, we need to make some changes to keep buses moving well here.
Buses currently park on Railside Ave opposite Toyworld and the Henderson Returned Services Association (RSA), giving bus drivers a chance to have a break before their next trip, or change drivers.
Bus parking (layover) at Henderson Station is becoming constrained. Buses often double park, use space designated for car parking, or use active passenger drop off bus stop areas for layover when there is not enough room for them to park. We aim to fix this by providing more bus parking, designed to support the bus services operating to and from Henderson Station.
There is also work happening at Henderson Station as part of the City Rail Link, which will mean quicker journeys and more frequent trains from 2026. This work includes building a new train crew facility and an emergency exit bridge at Henderson Station. To do this, we will need to change where buses park once they have dropped passengers off at the station. There are three bus parking spaces on Railside Avenue that will be impacted while construction happens at the station, they will be re-instated once construction is complete (shown in purple on the map below).
What we are proposing
Installing new permanent bus parking (layover) spaces at three nearby streets. These new layovers will be located on Dora Street, Cranwell Street and Vitasovich Avenue.
Figure 1: Area map, with proposed new bus parking spaces shown in blue.
The proposed new bus layover locations
Figure 2: Cranwell Street proposed bus parking changes. The proposed bus parking area on Cranwell Street would be located on the road between the fire station and the church. Works include painting of new yellow lines on the road to show no stopping except for buses, and putting up two new signs on the footpath.
Figure 3: DoraStreet proposed bus parking changes. The proposed area for parking three more buses on Dora Street would be located on both sides of the road – on one side between The Toolshed Henderson and the Dollar Dealers, and on the other side outside McDonalds. It would require removal of 14 parking spaces, painting of new yellow lines on the road to show no stopping except for buses, and putting up six new bus parking P30 signs on the footpath.
Figure 4: Vitasovich Avenue proposed bus parking changes. The proposed area for parking three buses on Vitasovich Avenue is on the Waikumete Stream side of the road, near to the View Road intersection.
Ninety metres of kerb side (equivalent to15 non-marked parking spaces) would be re-allocated, with new yellow lines painted on the road to show no stopping except for buses. Six new signs would also be put up on the footpath. It would also require construction of two small sections of concrete footpath extensions for drivers to step out onto. This is important during rainy weather when the soil becomes wet and muddy, to minimise the risk of slipping.
Benefits and impacts
- Providing adequate bus layover areas for extended breaks will ensure bus drivers have the space they need on Railside Avenue for passenger pick up/drop off.
- The layover areas allow drivers to have a much-needed refreshment break, and to swap drivers at the start or end of a shift.
- The new layover areas will improve the efficiency of bus operations, ensuring smoother and more streamlined operations.
- The plan will require the removal of 14 parking spaces in total.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
- How many parking spaces will be removed?
14 spaces on Dora Street. (The kerb side on Vitasovich Avenue is not official parking space, although vehicles do park here.) - How long will buses usually be stopped in these places?
About 30 minutes - Will this lead to more noise from buses outside my property/business?
There will likely be more noise but buses will be parked, with the engine off for most of the time at each layover, so the noise increase will be minimal. - Will this impact access to my home/business?
The buses will not be blocking driveways, so access will not be impacted. This will fix the current challenges for bus drivers where at times they will park in a space that is too small and block driveways or reduce visibility. - Will this impact sightlines from my home/business driveway?
All designs have been assessed to ensure driveways maintain or improve visibility. - How long will construction/painting and sign installation take?
Less than one week. - Will this cause disruption on my street?
There will be minor disruptions during the implementation of these changes. - What are the hours of operation?
Buses will use these spaces from 05:30am – 00:00, seven days a week.
