Great South Road and Coles Crescent intersection Improvement Project

Heads Up! We are proposing to signalise this intersection and provide two signalised crossings to improve safety for all road users
This project is part of Auckland Transport's High-Risk Intersection Programme, a safety improvement programme that prioritises safety interventions at high-rik intersections in Auckland.
Between 2017 and 2024, 29 crashes were reported at this location, including one serious and 13 minor injury crashes. A significant number of these crashes involved right-turning vehicles and vulnerable road users. Key issues identified include poor visibility, difficulty in finding safe gaps in traffic, increasing turning movements due to Coles Crescent being used as a bypass, and a lack of pedestrian crossing facilities.
The project aims to address these safety and operational concerns, thereby enhancing safety for all road users.
What changes are we proposing?
Install a signalised intersection with pedestrian crossings on Coles Crescent and the Great South Road south approach
Install associated road markings and signage to support the signalisation
Reconstruct footpaths to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility
Relocate the bus stop outside #71 Great South Road to further south
- Removal of two car parks on Coles Crescent to formalise the signalised intersection

Signalising the intersection controls all movements and manages the traffic flow, while prioritising safe crossings for pedestrians.
Safer pedestrian crossing facilities will make it easier and more enjoyable for you, our Tamariki, and the community to navigate your neighbourhood with confidence.
- Parking changes will involve removing two parking spaces on Coles Crescent (see plan for details) and painting broken yellow lines to provide queuing spaces for vehicles, ensuring that pedestrians crossing the road can see approaching vehicles clearly.
