Safe walking connections on Greenhithe Road

About this project

We're improving crossing safety near Greenhithe School! The crossing facility will prioritise people crossing, especially our tamariki, school whānau & local community.

Growing communities means busier roads – so we need to improve crossing facilities and make travelling locally safer for everyone!

The changes we’re making:

• Upgrading the crossing outside #50 Greenhithe Road, with wider central crossing islands. These crossing islands are a small section of pavement surrounded by concrete where people can safely wait when crossing the street.
• Upgrading the pram crossings with tactile pavers & footpaths on either side of the crossing, allowing more room to wait to cross safely. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance markers that help vision-impaired people cross the road.
• Moving bus stop route #12 from outside the school to further down Greenhithe Road opposite to #44 Greenhithe Road and south of the driveway (heading towards Sunnyview Road). This will clear access for the bus entry and exit away from the school driveway.
• Installing new speed cushions to slow down vehicles approaching the crossing. Speed cushions are small speed bumps placed in the middle of the road. Larger vehicles can pass without impact and smaller vehicles need to slow down.
• Install a new flush median near the intersection of Sunnyview Road & Greenhithe Road. This is a painted area in the middle of the road to give drivers a safe place to wait while turning in and out of Sunnyview Road. It improves traffic flow and reduces the risk of collisions at this busy intersection.
• Painting a new Bus Stop and road markings outside 1a Churchouse Road to show that this is a bus stop. It shows motorists where not to park and helps bus drivers stop in the right place making it safer and easier to get on and off the bus.
• To make space for the new crossing and bus stop, and to help buses move safely in and out without blocking driveways, we need to reallocate road space by removing 4 parking spaces — 1 outside #44 Greenhithe Road and 3 across the road at the new bus stop. This will also make it easier for people to see the crossing clearly.

What happens next

We will install these changes in 2025/2026.
