About the Project

We’re responding to requests make Greenhithe Road safer and easier for people to walk along by building a new section of footpath on the northern side of the road. This will fill in the missing gap so that everyone in the community can enjoy a safe, well-connected walking route.

This project is part of our Footpath Programme, which aims to create safer, convenient and well-connected walking options in your community.

The changes we’re making in early 2026

  • Install a new concrete footpath along Greenhithe Road to improve access and connectivity for people on foot.
  • Install pram crossings and tactile pavers at key crossing points to make it easier and safer for people with mobility needs and those pushing prams or strollers.
  • Regrade grass berms to match the new footpath alignment and improve accessibility.
  • Realign the kerb to create space for a new footpath along Greenhithe Road. This will narrow the roadway to support safer infrastructure for people walking.
  • Reconstruct driveways impacted by the new footpath and kerb alignment.
  • Clear vegetation and remove or relocate trees where necessary to ensure safe and unobstructed access for footpath users.
  • Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) along Greenhithe Road, starting before the existing bus stop, continuing around the new pram crossings, at the intersection with Blacks Road. These markings will improve visibility and safety for people crossing the road and for vehicles entering or exiting driveways. To make space for these safety improvements, 19 on-street parking spaces will be removed. A Parking study was undertaken which showed parking demand in this area was very low (<15%).
  • Add bus stop road markings and no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) to improve visibility and access for people walking and waiting for public transport.
  • Install new “Give Way” markings and signs on Blacks Road with the intersection of Greenhithe Road to remind drivers to slow down and give way.

A drawing showing the changes is available for download to the right.

Benefits to your community

  • Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot. Widening the footpath gives more room for people to wait to cross.
  • Pram crossings make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers and ensure those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
  • Well-maintained footpaths are safer for people who walk and ride their bikes and scooters, reducing the risk of being hurt or injured.
  • More footpaths make it easier and stress-free for the community to move around the neighbourhood, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport and other local amenities.
  • Walking and cycling is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.

What happens next

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
