Improving safety at the Great South Road and Glenora Road intersection
The intersection of Great South Road and Glenora Road is a busy location, with high pedestrian, cycling, and vehicle activity generated by the surrounding retail and commercial area. A recent safety assessment identified risks associated with the lack of dedicated pedestrian crossing facilities, particularly given the high volume of people walking through the area.
To address these issues and to support safer, more accessible travel for all users, Auckland Transport is proposing a series of targeted improvements at this intersection.
What we’re planning to do before June 2026
Installing a signalised pedestrian crosswalk on the northern approach of Great South Road.
Minor kerb buildouts to shorten the crossing distance on Glenora Road approach.
Installing yellow tactile pavers at all crossing points to assist visually impaired pedestrians.
Formalise existing bus stops outside 237 Great South Road by painting new bus stop markings
Paint Advanced Stop Boxes on Glenora Road to improve cyclist visibility and safety.
Right turn ban out of 233 Great south Road driveway to ensure intersection operational safety. Motorists going southbound on Great South Road can still exit via the alternate access on The Furlong.
Removal of 5 roadside parking outside McDonalds on Glenora Road.
Why are we proposing the right turn ban?
Right turns here create a conflict point where vehicles cross multiple lanes and interact with pedestrians and cyclists. Removing this movement will:
Reduce crash risk for people using the crossing.
Improve traffic flow and reduce delays at the intersection.
How this will benefit your neighbourhood
These improvements aim to strengthen safety and accessibility across a key movement corridor for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users.
Enhances pedestrian safety in an area with consistently high foot traffic.
Improves visibility and safety for cyclists travelling along Great South Road, a key cycling route.
Supports more efficient and reliable bus services along a frequent transit network corridor.
Provides better accessibility for people with disabilities through upgraded crossing facilities and tactile paving.
