About the project

Great North Road is a major road for thousands of Aucklanders. About 39,000 vehicles travel along this road daily to commute to work, school, and deliver goods and services to homes and businesses across Tāmaki Makaurau.

Though much of Great North Road is open to the free flow of traffic, parking is still allowed along a small section in New Lynn between Waters Place and Wattle Street.

Although few cars still park here, people in the area have told us the ones that do can create traffic bottlenecks on the road, causing congestion, delays and safety and visibility issues for people trying to manoeuvre around the parked cars. This is especially an issue for buses, freight and other large vehicles and can negatively affect reliability of services.

Some car crashes have also happened in this area because of the parked cars.

What we proposed

Due to the low level of parking demand on this part of Great North Road, to stop the bottlenecks that create congestion, delays, and safety/visibility issues, and to make it consistent with the rest of the corridor, we proposed to install broken yellow lines along Great North Road between Waters Place and Wattle Street in New Lynn.

Design drawings on our webpage provide more details.
