About the Project
We’re upgrading a section of Glenvar Road, between Glenvar Ridge Road and Captain Close to make it stronger, safer and ready for future growth in Torbay as part of our Summer Road Reno regular road maintenance programme.
Glenvar Road hasn’t had a full upgrade since 1970. Over 5,000 vehicles use it daily. This upgrade is more than just a new road surface – it’s an investment in the future of Torbay.
Our work will make the road stronger, safer, and better prepared for bad weather.
This 7-week upgrade will be done in two phases. We’ll be improving stormwater drainage, rebuilding the road foundation, and resurfacing the road.
We need to close westbound traffic and use a one-way detour 24/7 while work is underway. Eastbound traffic from Glenvar Ridge Road will continue as normal until the last 2 weeks when both directions will be closed and detours in place.
What you need to know
Where
Glenvar Road, between Glenvar Ridge Road and Captain Close
We need to close Westbound traffic and use one-way detour 24/7 for 5 weeks
For the final 2 weeks, a full closure is needed on this section of Glenvar Road
When
18 August – October 2025
(weather dependent)
Hours of work
Monday to Sunday, 7am to 11pm.
Nightworks outside of this will be communicated to you closer to the time
What we’ll be doing
Digging up and rebuilding the road
Fixing and upgrading drainage
Laying a strong concrete base
Testing for quality and durability
Duration
Up to 7 weeks (weather dependent)
Phase 1 – Kerb & drainage work (5 weeks)
• Stage 1: 2.5 weeks north side (Aug)
• Stage 2: 2.5 weeks south side (Aug–late Sept)
Phase 2 – Road rebuild (2 weeks)
• Stage 2: 2 weeks north side (Sept)
• Stage 1: 2 weeks south side (Sept–Oct)
Final night work for resurfacing: 9pm to 5am Mid October
Why
Routine checks showed the road is nearing the end of its lifespan.
Upgrading now will make it safer and prevent future issues.
Helps prepare for more growth and traffic in the area
How travel is affected:
Phase 1 - Detours (5 weeks)
One-way detour in place 24/7 (westbound closed)
Eastbound (from Glenvar Ridge Rd roundabout towards Captain Close) traffic can continue as normal.
Westbound (toward East Coast Road) traffic will be detoured for phase 1 & 2 as follows
•Southbound on Ashley Ave, can follow the red or black line detour.
•Northbound from Ian Sage Ave, can follow the red or black line detour.
•North on Captain Close + Moorgreen Heights, turn right only.
•North on Stredwick Drive will be closed, and will need to follow the black line detour east or west.
Phase 2 - Full Road closure (2 weeks)
24/7 Full Road closure for East & Westbound traffic
Eastbound traffic from Glenvar/Glenvar RIdge Road roundabout will follow the blue line detour. Up Glenvar Ridge Road and down Ashley Ave
See above for Westbound detours
Clear detour signs will be in place and traffic managers will help keep things moving.
Bus stops may move, but we’ll manage access to homes, including on Stredwick Drive.
Plan ahead - there will be detours in place. Please follow the signs and drive carefully. We’ve chosen the one-way detour to reduce confusion and keep traffic flowing safely.
Northbound from Captain Close, Stredwick Drive, or Mooregreen Heights: Right turn only
Southbound on Astley Ave: Follow the red line detour
Northbound from Ian Sage Ave or Glenvar/Astley intersection: Right turn only – follow detour signs
See detour map on this page
On-site staff to help people walking or driving
Resident access managed at all times, incl those off Stredwick Drive
Follow detour signs and plan ahead
Check signs & AT Mobile for updated bus stop locations
The work we’ll be doing and traffic management & detours
We’ll be doing work in stages for approximately 7 weeks. We’ll be working from 7am – 11pm to deliver this project as quickly as possible. Work between 7pm - 11pm will be minor and we apologise for the inconvenience. We know construction, particularly at night – can be disruptive. We’ll try to keep noise levels down.
We aim to start work on time but factors outside our control, such as weather, could mean a delayed timeline. If the delay is significant, we’ll let you know and update the webpage regularly.
In advance of our start date there will be digital signs set up along the route to inform the community about the closure and traffic directions for surrounding roads, also see the maps on our webpage.
Expect traffic delays, especially during peak times. Three bus stops will be temporarily closed, and some services will be affected – please use the AT mobile app or the QR codes on posters available at the effected bus stops for more information.
Detours will be in place from 18th August 2025, so allow extra travel time. Follow all traffic signs, signals, and directions for safety. Take care while driving, walking, or cycling in the area, especially if you live along one of the detour routes.
Driveway and vehicle access to your property will be restricted when we work outside your property. If your driveway is restricted, you will need to park nearby and walk home. On-street parking will be limited.
Footpaths will remain accessible to local residents.
Council waste and recycling collection will continue as normal. If access to your bin collection spot is restricted, our team will assist you with an alternative location.
For more information about these types of work, please take a look at this video here - FH Resurfacing Work
Where we’ll be working
Before the work starts, digital signs will be set up along the route and near the town centre to inform the community about the closure and traffic directions for surrounding roads.
You can download maps here on our website. We appreciate your patience during this work
DETOUR MAPS
Benefits to the Community
Safer journeys for everyone
A smoother, more reliable road means fewer potholes and safer conditions for all road users – including drivers, cyclists, bus passengers, and people walking.
Better stormwater drainage
Upgraded drainage systems will help reduce surface flooding during heavy rain, protecting nearby homes, properties, and the road itself.
Longer-lasting road
By laying a strong concrete foundation beneath the surface, we’re building a road that’s expected to last for the next 20+ years with fewer repairs needed.
Environmentally responsible
Around 50% of the existing road material will be recycled and reused in other Auckland road projects, reducing waste and supporting sustainability.
Future-proofing for growth
Torbay is a growing community. This work helps prepare Glenvar Road for more traffic in the years ahead, keeping the area moving safely and efficiently.
The following bus routes are impacted (18 Aug - Oct 2025)
TBA
