Project Update - 1 July 2026

Earlier this year, in February 2026, we engaged with Glenfield residents on the planned signalisation of the intersection at Glenfield Road and Roberts Road. This is a busy intersection, and the planned changes will make it safer for everyone.

Based on feedback from residents, we have made a small change to the design. We originally planned to add two new speed humps on the small service lane on the southern side of Glenfield Road, one outside 329 Glenfield Road and one outside 339 Glenfield Road. Residents asked for an extra speed hump outside 345 Glenfield Road to slow down cars and make the street safer, so we will add this as well. This means there will now be three new speed humps in total on the service lane. No other changes have been made.

We also need more time to check underground services and nearby trees and vegetation before construction starts. These checks will help reduce the risk of delays once work begins, so construction is now planned for early 2027.

An updated drawing of the design can be found to the right of the page labelled Glenfield-Roberts Drawing updated design July 2026.

If you have any questions or comments on the planned changes, please email us at ATengagement@at.govt.nz (ref: Glenfield Road and Roberts Road) by 18 July 2026.

9 March 2026 - Engagement Outcome

The project engagement period is now closed. We will update the community on the outcome soon and reply to all emails and online feedback from individuals who shared their email address.

About the project

We’re responding to safety concerns raised by the community by improving travel through the Glenfield Road and Roberts Road intersection. Currently, it is difficult for cars to turn right out of Roberts Road onto Glenfield Road, vehicles are misjudging the bend on Glenfield Road, and there is no safe place for people to cross this busy intersection. To make this area safer for everyone, we will be installing new traffic lights and traffic light-controlled crossings at this intersection.

The changes we're making in mid-2026:

  • Install new traffic lights and traffic light-controlled crossings at the Roberts Road and Glenfield Road intersection.
  • Add No Stopping at All Times (Broken Yellow Lines) outside #1, #3, #5, #6, #8, and #10 Roberts Road.
  • Realign the footpath and cut back kerb outside 316 Roberts Road.
  • Build out the kerb, realign bus stop, and reconstruct driveways outside #316 and #320 Glenfield Road.
  • Construct new kerb buildouts and footpaths outside #329 and #333 Glenfield Road.
  • Add two new speed humps on the service lane - one outside #329 and one outside #339 Glenfield Road.
  • Relocate the bus stop and shelter from outside #325 Glenfield Road to #329 Glenfield Road.
  • Install flashing advanced intersection warning signs outside #339 and #341 Glenfield Road.
  • Apply high friction surfacing on intersection approaches.
  • Add cycle advance stop boxes at the intersection
  • To clear access and improve visibility we need to reallocate road space and remove:
  • 2 parking space outside #3 Roberts Roads
  • approx. 12 parking spaces outside #320 #314 #312 #304 #326 Glenfield Road.

A larger drawing can be found to the right of this page.

Benefits to your community:

Safer Intersection: New traffic lights and the traffic light controlled crossings will improve safety for all road users by reducing the chance of crashes and near misses at this intersection.

Encourages Active Modes: Wider footpaths and other upgrades will make it safer and more convenient for families to walk and cycle in the area.

Community Friendly: With schools and parks nearby, the changes will create safer routes for the entire community.

Improved Road Use: Reallocating road space will make it easier and safer for vehicles to turn, providing clearer, more efficient access through the intersection.

What happens next:

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
