About the project

Heads up! We’re upgrading the Glenfield & Kaipātiki Road intersection to make walking, cycling and driving safer and easier, so everyone gets where they need to and home safely

We want to support the growing needs of Glenfield with better, improved access near Glenfield mall and to get around safely in your neighbourhood

The intersection of Glenfield and Kaipātiki Road is very busy and has a lot of traffic and demand for crossing safely. Glenfield Road gets about 19,900 vehicles per day, and Kaipātiki Road about 10,800 vehicles per day.

This intersection is considered high-risk because of the high volume of traffic and people on foot, especially with people going in and out of Glenfield Mall. Currently, there are no proper crossing facilities at the free left hand turns into the mall, which makes it unsafe for people walking.

Why this is important

Improving safety: This intersection is high risk, making it important to upgrade for everyone’s safety including people walking, cycling and driving, especially for children and families accessing nearby schools and parks.

Improved access: It will make it easier for customers to access local shops and businesses, supporting the local economy and fostering a vibrant community.

Lack of safe crossings outside Glenfield Mall : Currently, there is no safe crossing on the free turn lane outside Glenfield Mall. This will help people cross the road safely to get to the traffic light crossings, and give them crossing priority.

Supporting the Community: The area is busy with nearby businesses, residents, schools and parks, so these changes will make it easier and safer for everyone to get around and support a liveable and accessible neighbourhood.

The changes we’re making

  1. New Zebra Crossings and traffic island upgrades
    • Installing zebra crossings on the two free turn lanes entering and exiting Glenfield Mall.
    • Makes it safer and easier for people to cross by slowing traffic and giving people on foot a clear, visible place to walk.
    • Traffic islands give people crossing a safe waiting area, separates them from traffic and gives better visibility to drivers
  2. Footpath upgrades
    • Widen the existing footpath on all corners of the intersection, allowing more waiting area for people on foot and ramps for prams or mobility scooters.
    • Upgrade pram crossings to make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers to cross roads. It helps ensure those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
    • Install new tactile pavers, which are yellow guidance markers, at all crossing locations to help visually impaired people find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
  • Streetlight Upgrades: Upgrading existing streetlights to support the new zebra crossings if necessary.
  • New signs and road marking: Painting new road markings and installing signs and beacon lights so motorists know to give priority to people crossing the road here.

Benefits to your community

• Safer Crossings – Clearer zebra crossings and better lighting make it easier for drivers to see people crossing

• Better Accessibility – Upgraded pram crossings and tactile pavers help people with mobility needs, parents with strollers, and those with vision impairments.

• Improved Traffic Flow – Marked slip lane crossings help pedestrians and vehicles move safely and efficiently.

• Enhanced Visibility – Upgraded streetlights (if needed) will improve visibility at night and in low-light conditions.

• No Parking Impact – These upgrades won’t reduce on-street parking, keeping convenience for drivers.

• More travel choices - Get around Glenfield by walking, cycling or scooter, that is good for you, your whanāu and the environment

• Better for you - improves your health and well-being to enjoy the outdoors in your neighbourhood safely
