Community Feedback
Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge.
We consulted with your community in July 2024 and received 18 survey responses. From the feedback we received 89% (16 respondents) told us the changes would benefit the community.
This is what you had to say about our proposal:
Reduce the amount of drivers who do not stop at that particular pedestrian crossing
Safety to cross the road
Safer crossing for children attending Macleans primary.
It would help my kids to cross the road without any safety issues. My kid is a student at Maclean Primary school.
By making this a much safer pedestrian crossing for everyone who uses it, but especially for school students walking to and from school. It would reduce the number of "close calls" of cars and students and also enforce a reduce speed limit for motorists on this stretch of road.
My opinion we need to install that zebra crossing for the benefits of all students including elderly people, Do it now before it's too late. I have witnessed a lots of rude and bad driver they don't care students when they crossing
Safety for young people walking to school at Macleans and Bucklands beach intermediate.
Students of Macleans Primary can safely cross the road and the parents too.
Safer for our Macleans primary school students when crossing
By forcing people to slow down for the pedestrian crossing, which is often crossed by people travelling well in excess of the speed limit, in both directions.
Make it safer for kids.
Below is a summary of your feedback and our responses.
Safety
Concerned that the raised pedestrian crossing will not address the root cause on Gills Road
Concerned the existing crossing is dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians x2
Concerned with sun blinding drivers and pedestrians as they approach the crossing x2
Concerned school children are not being seen
This project focuses on improving safety at the pedestrian crossing by addressing the issue of drivers not stopping for pedestrians. By raising the crossing, we aim to slow down vehicles and make pedestrians more visible to drivers, as they will be at eye level with approaching cars.
------------------------------------
About the project
We’ve received requests from the community to help address how drivers behave near the current zebra crossing on 90 Gills Road in Highland Park.
Motorists are failing to stop and give priority to people crossing, especially students from nearby McLeans Primary School.
The changes we’re proposing:
Installing a zebra crossing on top of a wide flat speed hump outside #90 Gills Road. It will be level with the footpath with a long off-ramp. This makes it more comfortable for larger vehicles and their passengers.
Build a new footpath on both sides of the raised zebra crossing to give more room for people to wait to cross safely.
Installing tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help people with a visual impairment find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
Installing new signs and beacon lights on the raised zebra crossing. Beacon lights help to alert drivers that they are approaching a crossing and to slow down.

Benefits and impacts
A raised crossing improves visibility by ensuring people crossing can be seen by approaching motorists.
Raising the crossing to the level of the footpath and beacon lights, will alert drivers to slow on approach and to expect lots of people crossing the road here
Makes it more comfortable for everyone, including people with prams and wheelchairs, to cross the road as the crossing is level with the footpath.
