About the project
We are planning to make changes to the layout of the east bound lanes, towards the motorway on Fred Taylor Drive.
These changes are based on feedback from the community, and from monitoring traffic flows since the bus lanes were introduced in 2024. The planned changes are designed to improve traffic flow for all road users.
Current layout at this location.
Changes include
Moving the cycle lane to the left through this section of the road
Installing cycle lane separators to improve safety for cyclists
Creating two continuous lanes for through traffic from Maki Street to Gunton Drive intersections
Widening the footpath near Gunton Road intersection to create a shared path
A drawing of the planned changes, a more detailed drawing is available to download in the documents section of this website.
Benefits of the changes
Better use of space - Reallocation of existing road space will provide two continuous lanes for through traffic. This will reduce the number of vehicles changing lanes.
Reduced traffic congestion – The new layout should reduce the queue of waiting traffic for Fred Taylor Drive, Tawhia Drive and Fernhill Drive.
Enhanced safety – Moving the cycle lane from the centre to the left of the road and installing cycle separators provides a safer option for cyclists. Cyclists can also choose to use the traffic lane if that is their preference. Cycle lane separators will also be installed for cyclists waiting at the lights at Gunton Drive.
The bus lanes on Fred Taylor Drive support the reliability of the WX1 bus service to and from the central city, until the Northwest Busway - Te Ara Hauāuru is completed alongside SH16.
What happens next
We are currently updating the community about the planned changes, with the opportunity to provide any insights or comments until October 10, 2025.
If there are no significant changes to the design based on the community engagement, we expect to deliver these changes before March 2026.
We will update this webpage with any changes and the construction timeline when this is confirmed.
