Everyone deserves to be safe on Auckland roads. To help improve safety on Fred Taylor Drive, Westgate we are proposing a speed limit change to 50km/h.

About the project

Fred Taylor Drive, Westgate was once part of State Highway 16, and it still has a speed limit of 80km/h.

Westgate is one of four identified urban nodes in Auckland that will accommodate substantial growth in the coming years. The area has become a busy suburb, with significant new residential and commercial development. By 2048 it is expected over 80,000 people will live here.

To make it safer for everyone living, shopping and moving around Westgate, we propose to change the speed limit on Fred Taylor Drive from 80km/h to 50km/h. This is consistent with other urban areas in the Auckland Region.

Community consultation is open for six weeks until 29 May 2026.

The changes we are proposing:

Fred Taylor Drive

Introduce a 50km/h urban speed limit to help make it safer for everyone in a place where there are people living, working, catching the bus and getting to shops and schools.

Dunlop Road (off Fred Taylor Drive)

Lower the speed limit from 80km/h to 50km/h on the existing section. Currently a short cul-de-sac, Dunlop Road will be extended as the area develops with any new stretches built to a 50km/h residential standard.

Except for Fred Taylor Drive and the short, unfinished section of Dunlop Road, all other existing, and planned, roads in Westgate have a 50km/h speed limit.

Benefits of this project:

Everyone deserves to be safe on Auckland roads. In the last five years there has been 1 fatal, 3 serious injury, 6 minor injury and 5 non-injury crashes on Fred Taylor Drive. The benefits of this proposal include:

  • Enhanced safety for everyone walking, driving and moving around on this road
  • More time for drivers to see, react and stop if something goes wrong
  • An appropriate speed limit for an area that has changed to an urban environment
  • Consistent urban speeds on all local roads

Cost benefit disclosure statement:

The government's Land Transport Rule - Setting of Speed Limit Rule 2024 requires us to complete a cost benefit disclosure statement for the proposed speed limit change. This sets out the expected impact of the speed limit changes on safety and travel times, and the expected implementation cost.

The proposed reduction is expected to -

  • lower the average speed on this stretch of road from 57 km/h to 48 km/h
  • cause a 22-second travel time increase
  • incur an implementation cost of $15,000

See the full report at the top of the page.

The map below shows the extent of the proposed speed limit change:

What happens next?

  • Community consultation is open for six weeks until 29 May 2026.
  • Consider community feedback and present feedback report to the Henderson Massey Local Board
  • Receive local board feedback prior to a final decision being made
