About the project

Heads up! We plan to upgrade this intersection in 2025 to make driving and walking safer and easier, so everyone gets where they need to and home safely.

These upgrades below will enhance safety, alleviate driver confusion and also support the growing needs of Forrest Hill, ensuring that our roads are ready for the future.

Drawings can be downloaded to the right of this webpage

The changes we’re making

1. New traffic light-controlled crossings:

  • on the southern side, near 129 Forrest Hill Road & 131 Forrest Hill Road
  • dual crossing for people on foot and cycling near 96 Forrest Hill Road

2. Remove two existing left turn lanes

  • Eastbound on Tristram Avenue: vehicles turning left at the traffic lights onto Forrest Hill Road.
  • Northbound on Forrest Hill Road: free turn left onto Tristram Avenue.

3. Footpath improvements: At the intersection, including more waiting area for people on foot, upgraded pram crossings, and new tactile pavers (raised bumps on the ground to help guide visually impaired people).

4. Relocate bus stop: from 130 to 100 Forrest Hill Road, to make way for the new crossing improvements and clear access so buses can turn safely. We will provide two additional on-street parking spaces outside number 130.

5. New signs and road markings: on both Forrest Hill Road and Tristram Avenue, clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.

6. We’ll keep an eye on traffic flow: including traffic light timing.

7. Reallocating road space: To clear access and improve visibility for motorists and people on foot. This will result in the loss of 4 parking spaces near the intersection.

PROJECT DESIGNS

Benefits to your community

  • Improves crossing safety & slower speeds near the intersection: Removing left turn lanes and adding a new traffic-light controlled crossing, prioritises people crossing, improves visibility to motorists and slows vehicle speeds as traffic must stop
  • Easier turns for larger vehicles: easier for larger vehicles to turn at the intersection, without treading on to the footpath.
  • Clear and easy to navigate: new signs and road markings will help drivers position themselves in the correct lanes, reducing confusion and potential crashes
  • Supports accessibility: for people with mobility challenges, prams, or bikes
  • More travel choices around Forrest Hill by foot, bike, or scooter that is good for you, your whānau and the environment
  • Improves your health and well-being to enjoy the outdoors in your neighbourhood.
