About the project
We’re improving footpath safety and accessibility on The Esplanade, close to Campbells Bay Beach to make it safer and easier for beach goers to get to and from the beach.
We plan to build a new footpath on the northern side of The Esplanade, Campbells Bay connecting people to the beach. Currently there is only a footpath on the southern side of the road, and a footpath on both sides of the road will make it easier and safer for everyone.
Thanks to the AT walking programme, we’re able to build more footpaths in local communities like yours, to make it safer and easier for people to walk around.
The changes we’re making
Install a new footpath starting from the existing footpath at 4 The Esplanade, Campbells Bay to 22 The Esplanade, Campbells Bay, extending it to the beach entrance.
Reconstruct driveways outside the addresses above to ensure the footpath meets the required footpath standards. Any work that alters a driveway will be at our cost.
Install a new kerb buildout along the footpath to direct the stormwater.
Install a new pram ramp at the beach entrance to make it safer and more convenient for people with mobility needs and those pushing prams to reach the beach.
Removing one on-street park outside #20 The Esplanade and instal a single parallel car park for better access for household driveways nearby. This helps keep driveway access free and safe.
Vegetation pruning could be required to install the footpath along the new route.
Footpath Designs
Benefits to your community:
Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot. People will be able to walk on either side of The Esplanade safely. Well-maintained footpaths are safer for people, especially tamariki, who walk and ride their bikes and scooters, reducing the risk of being hurt or injured.
More footpaths make it easier for the community to move around the neighbourhood, offering better connections to schools, parks, beaches, public transport and other local amenities.
Walking, using scooters and cycling are good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
What happens next
We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
