We’re improving safety on Maire Road and West Hoe Heights in Orewa to create safe, convenient, and well-connected walking and cycling options in your neighbourhood. This is part of our Footpath programme, which commits to encouraging safe walking in your community.

The changes we’re making in April/May 2026:

Footpath safety

  • Construct a new footpath from #136 West Hoe Heights to #17 Maire Road.
  • Install a grass berm between the footpath and kerb and extend kerb lines as needed.
  • Install new retaining wall along Maire Road and West Hoe Heights Road to support the new footpath and enhance safety for people walking.
  • Reconstruct driveways that will be impacted by the new footpath: #138, #140, #184, #190 West Hoe Heights Road and #17 Maire Road. Any work that alters a driveway shall be at our cost.
  • Remove trees and shrubs along West Hoe Heights Road for the new footpath. Two protected kānuka trees will be replaced with new plantings along the corridor, and pruning will be done where needed to keep the path clear for people walking.
  • Install ‘No Stopping at All Times’ (broken yellow lines) from #13 to #15 Maire Road to clear access and improve visibility for all road users.

Intersection safety on Maire Road & Harvest Avenue

  • Upgrade the existing crossing island and pram ramps with tactile pavers at the intersection. This will provide a safer waiting area and make crossing easier for people with mobility needs and those with prams or strollers.
  • Install ‘No Stopping at All Times’ (broken yellow lines) at the southern side of Maire Road and Harvest Avenue intersection to clear access and improve visibility for all road users.
  • Install new signs and road markings so drivers know they are approaching a crossing and need to slow down.

Benefits to your community:

  • Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot.
  • Well-maintained footpaths are safer for people who walk and ride their bikes and scooters, reducing the risk of being hurt or injured.
  • More footpaths make it easier and stress-free for you and local children to move about your community, offering better connections to schools, parks, public transport and other local amenities.
  • Encouraging walking and cycling is good for the environment and your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing carbon emissions.
  • Pram crossings have a small ramp at the kerb level to make it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers to crossroads. It has a small ramp at the curb level, reducing the need to lift the pram, which can be unsafe, especially when managing traffic. It helps ensure those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
  • New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.

What happens next:

  • We will be in touch with residents before any construction takes place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
