Improving Footpath Connection - Great South Road & Mahia Road Intersection, Manurewa
About the project
Kia ora, tālofa lava, mālō e lelei, kia orana, fakaalofa lahi atu, bula vinaka, nǐ hǎo, namaste, kumusta, néih hóu, and warm greetings.
Auckland Transport is planning to build a new footpath to connect the missing section along Great South Road, between the Papakura Stream crossing and the Mahia Road intersection.
Why here?
The Manurewa Local Board and the community have identified this as a priority to improve access for people walking, cycling, and vulnerable users. This new footpath will make it safer and easier to get to Te Mahia Train Station, local parks like Papakura Stream Reserve, schools, and nearby shops.
This project is funded by Auckland Council’s Climate Action Transport Targeted Rate (CATTR), which supports projects that reduce transport emissions in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
The changes we're making
• Build a new footpath link on Great South Road between properties #327 and #321.
• Install a new zebra crossing on the slip lane at the southern approach of the Great South Road and Mahia Road intersection.
• Adjust the slip lane’s curve (radius) to slow down vehicles turning left into Mahia Road, making it safer for everyone.
• Paint broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) on both sides of the new footpath, from the bridge crossing to the driveways of properties #327, #325 and #325A. This will remove 5 on-street parking spaces. These yellow lines will help clear access and improve visibility for motorists to enter and exit driveways safely.
• Paint broken yellow lines at the bus stop in front of property #324 Great South Road to improve access for buses and restrict vehicles from parking on either side of the bus stop.
You can view the drawing below to see the details of where these changes will be made.
Benefits to your community
• Safer journeys: Footpaths separate people walking and cycling from traffic, making our streets safer for everyone, especially tamariki (children), the elderly, and people with disabilities.
• Better connections: The new footpath will fill an important link, providing a safer way to reach Te Mahia Train Station, Papakura Stream Reserve, local shops, and the Southern Pathway, which connects to Papakura.
• A healthier, greener Manurewa: These improvements are part of a wider programme to encourage walking and cycling in your area. Less reliance on cars for short trips means less congestion and lower carbon emissions, helping to protect the environment and improve the health and wellbeing of our community.
• Investing in your future: As our community grows, we are committed to building safer, connected walking and cycling paths to improve transport options for everyone in Manurewa.
What happens next
We plan to install these changes by Autumn 2025.
Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
