Can the area be a Resident Parking Zone?

Edgerley Avenue has dual zoning under the Council’s Unitary plan, which means it is a mixed-use zone for business and residential - terrace housing and apartment building use. It's like the bustling streets in the city centre, Parnell, Upper Newton, and Ponsonby—areas with a mix of businesses, terrace housing, and apartments. And, like these areas, Newmarket has high parking demand and limited on-street parking availability.

AT is not considering parking permits for Edgerley Avenue.

Streets can change. They might get a makeover, or some parking spots could be removed. We do not guarantee that parking will remain the same. If permits were to be offered to residents and workers, parking spaces would remain occupied day and night, with little turnover.

Introducing paid parking on Edgerley Avenue will align it with other streets in the Newmarket paid parking zone.

Why is AT changing to paid parking?

We have received concerns from the community about the difficulty in finding parking on the street and vehicles parking on grass berms. Introducing paid parking hours creates 'turnover' of parking spaces for wider use, making it easier for people to find a place to park. This change will also align Edgerley Avenue with restrictions on other streets in the Newmarket paid parking zone, a step towards better parking management.

Paid parking will apply from Monday to Sunday, 8am to 6pm

No parking on grass berms will apply at all times. Signage will be installed to advise drivers.

About the project

Auckland Transport has received community requests to investigate the parking situation on Edgerley Avenue. We’ve received concerns about vehicles parking on the grass berms, and cars parked on the street all day, making it difficult for anyone, including visitors to find a place to park.

After investigation we found that Edgerley Avenue is currently one of the only streets near Newmarket Town Centre with unrestricted parking. This means that people who want to park all day, can do so which means there is little to no parking availability especially for short term stays. The community has also told us that people park on the grass berms on Edgerley Avenue, and our site visits have confirmed this and poor parking behaviour.

We’re proposing paid parking and no parking on berm restrictions

  • Paid parking for $1 per hour for the first two hours, and $2 per hour after the first two hours.
    • This means that dropping by to visit friends or family living on Edgerley Avenue for two hours would be $2, while parking for eight hours would be $14.
  • Paid parking would apply from Monday to Sunday, 8am to 6pm.
  • The proposed cost for parking is $1 per hour for the first two hours, and $2 per hour after the first two hours.
  • We’ll be installing “No Stopping Off Roadway” (no parking on berms) restrictions on Edgerly Avenue to stop cars parking on grass berms and allow for enforcement if vehicles continue to do so.

  • It causes visibility issues for drivers reversing out of driveways and access issues for people who live here.
  • In wet weather, parked cars create muddy footpaths and damage to the grass and can cause damage to underground utilities.
  • Benefits include reducing congestion on these roads during peak hour traffic.
