About this project

We’re upgrading the existing zebra crossing at 145 East Coast Road (near Selwyn Crescent), improving line markings for the angled car parking spaces and the bus stop to improve safety.

There have been multiple crashes at, or near, the crossing, including ones involving cyclists and pedestrians. To make this area safer we’re:

  • Building out the kerb in front of the shops and upgrading the existing side islands to improve visibility
  • Repainting the existing zebra crossing markings
  • Installing smart studs at the crossing. (Small lights in the road that turn on when someone is crossing to alert drivers)
  • Realigning the flush median and turning bay into Selwyn Crescent
  • Installing new high friction surfacing on the downhill approach to the crossing to enhance braking performance.
  • We are also improving the line marking for the angled parking spaces outside the shops to make it clearer for drivers how to use the space.

To make it easier for buses to move safety in the area, we are also installing line markings at the existing bus stop #3274 outside 156 East Coast Road and upgrading the existing markings at bus stop #3239 outside 131 East Coast Road.

A drawing showing the change is included below.

What happens next

  • We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
