Introducing New Zealand’s First Dynamic Loading Zone
Auckland Transport (AT) is trialling an innovative new parking solution in Newmarket. From June 2025, a dynamic loading zone will operate outside 2–8 Kingdon Street, near the intersection with Khyber Pass Road.
This trial is the first of its kind in Aotearoa and uses LED road lights to clearly indicate changing parking and loading rules throughout the day—helping drivers make informed decisions and making better use of limited street space.
This is a new kaupapa, funded by an NZTAInnovation trial, and partners with 3i to manage kerbside space using technology.
How It Works
LED lights installed in the road surface along the eastern kerb of Kingdon Street will signal which rules are in effect:
Yellow lights = Loading zone
White lights = Paid parking
No lights = Clearway (no stopping)
These lights will automatically change according to the time of day, removing confusion about what rules apply and when. Why We’re Doing This
This trial supports smarter street design and aims to:
Improve clarity for drivers
Optimise the use of high-demand curbside space
Test a future-ready technology that could be expanded across Auckland
Work will take place at night to reduce disruption
Properties and businesses nearby will be notified 5 days prior
