In June 2025, we wrote to you about plans to improve safety on Duncan Avenue in Te Atatū South, after residents raised concerns about driver safety. The goal of this project is to make the street safer and easier to use for everyone — whether you’re walking, cycling, scooting, or driving.
Thanks to the Henderson–Massey Local Board Transport Capital Fund, we’re now able to move ahead with these improvements.
Construction timing update
Construction was originally planned for October–November 2025. Due to some design updates, work is now planned to start in March 2026.
Design update: Thanks for sharing your thoughts
We’ve listened to the community and responded by making some small changes to the design to improve safety and make sure the project works well for residents and road users.
What the original design included
Removing the existing no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) outside 2A Duncan Avenue.
Adding a total of two new parking spaces on Duncan Avenue.
Adding centreline markings on approach to the speed humps.
Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) outside 3 Duncan Avenue.
What's been updated and the changes we're making by March 2026
Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) will now be painted outside 2A Duncan Avenue. This helps rubbish trucks safely turn left from McLeod Road into Duncan Avenue without hitting parked vehicles. We will need to clear access to reflect these changes by reallocating road space and remove three parking spaces.
Overall, there will now be one fewer parking space on Duncan Avenue.
We will no longer add centreline markings near the speed humps.
We will not install no stopping lines outside 3 Duncan Avenue, as cars are already unable to park there.
What stays the same
The following parts of the original plan are unchanged:
Replacing traffic islands with two new speed humps outside 2 and 24 Duncan Avenue
Adding no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) around the corner outside 5 and 26 Duncan Avenue to improve visibility
Installing new signs and lighting to support these changes
Benefits to your community
Make Duncan Avenue safer for drivers, especially when turning in and out of the street.
Improve visibility around corners and near speed humps.
Help rubbish trucks and service vehicles move through the area safely.
Create a street that feels safer and easier to use for people walking, cycling, scooting, and driving.
What happens next
We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any work taking place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
