What is the Dominion Road Alternative Cycle Route?

The Dominion Road Alternative Cycle Route is a quieter, low-stress cycling

corridor running north–south parallel to Dominion Road. It’s designed to provide a

safer option for children, older adults, and less confident riders, connecting

neighbourhoods from New North Road to Oakley Creek Path.

Why is Auckland Transport refreshing this route?

We’ve heard from the community that the current route has inconsistent signage, unclear wayfinding, and some tricky intersections. These issues can make cycling confusing or unsafe, especially for new riders. We’re refreshing the route to make it safer, clearer, and more enjoyable for everyone.

    What changes are being proposed?

    We’re looking to:

Refresh existing signage, markings, and ramps

    Improve wayfinding and route clarity

Identify and connect new destinations to the cycle route

Address complex intersections and safety concerns

How can I have my say?

    You can:

    • Complete our online survey

    • Attend a drop-in session to talk to the team in person

    • Share your feedback through your school or community group

Who can participate in this consultation?

Everyone! We want to hear from current cyclists, people who avoid the route parents, students, local businesses, and anyone who travels through the area - whether you walk, cycle, drive, or use public transport.

How will my feedback be used?

Your input will help us identify key issues, prioritise improvements, and shape the final design for the route. We’ll use your feedback to make the route safer and more accessible for all users.

What is the timeline for this project?

    Summer 2025: Consultation opens

Autumn 2026: Feedback analysis & detailed design

Winter 2026: Final proposed design confirmed and community informed.

Will there be any construction or roadworks?

At this stage, we are focused on planning and consultation.

Construction timelines will be shared once the design is finalised.

We’ll keep the community updated on any works happening, however this project is designed to be low impact (road markings and wayfinding signs installed)

How does this project support Auckland Transport’s strategic goals?

This project aligns with AT’s ambitions for safe journeys for everyone and better

experience on our existing network, making cycling safer and more attractive for all

    Aucklanders.
