About this project
The Auckland Network Optimisation (ANO) programme is a joint initiative between AT and NZTA focused on improving the efficiency of Auckland’s existing transport network. The programme aims to reduce congestion, make better use of road space, and support the safe and effective movement of people and goods across the city.
A key part of this work is keeping you as a motorist, informed in real time. Digital messaging signs also known as variable message signs are installed across the network to display live updates on traffic conditions, delays, and detours, especially during events. Each year, we support more than 800 special events. While these events bring vibrancy to the city, they also cause travel disruptions through road closures and detours. Currently, temporary digital signs are used during events to guide road users. However, these signs are expensive and provide limited coverage. This makes it harder to keep the public informed and to support our operations team in managing incidents and closures. Installing permanent digital messaging signs will improve coverage across the network and reduce long-term costs.
The changes we are making
We are planning to install:
9 driver and pedestrian digital messaging signs near Eden Park
7 driver and pedestrian digital messaging signs near Go Media Stadium
4 driver digital messaging signs at Western Springs Stadium
This project will be delivered in 3 phases, all of them highlighted in detail under the project timeframe section on the right hand side of this page.
Benefits of these signs
Encouraging smarter travel choices: Driver signs will alert drivers on upcoming events and provide live updates to help them avoid traffic and reduce congestion. Pedestrian signs will share public transport information, encouraging its use.
Happier and safer journeys: When people know what to expect, there’s less frustration and fewer risky moves on the road.
Event-ready Auckland: These tools help AT support major events and contribute to Auckland’s social, environmental, and economic goals.

Project timeframe
Phase 1 - Site observation (September/October 2025 approx.)
Keeping Aucklanders moving during events is currently at this stage
Over the next few weeks, contractors in high-vis gear will be checking the sites to ensure the poles that will hold the digital messaging sign boards can be safely installed.
We’ve coordinated with Vector to help minimise any disruption during this work.
Phase 2 – Pole installation to hold the digital messaging sign
this is an upcoming stage for Keeping Aucklanders moving during events
Once location feasibility is confirmed, we’ll:
Access services under the footpath, which may involve cutting concrete
In some places, we may need to replace the entire concrete slab for safety and stability or lay a new slab over the existing grass berm
Install poles to hold the signs
Poles will be installed before the signs to align with utility works.
Before any of the above work begins, you will receive a letter from our contractor outlining details about the works such as dates and impacts on travel.
Phase 3 – Install and turn on the digital messaging sign
this is an upcoming stage for Keeping Aucklanders moving during events
The digital messaging boards are being imported from overseas and will be installed once they arrive in Auckland and pass testing. Until this happens poles will be in place without digital boards.
