The feedback received indicates that residents are generally supportive of the project. The concerns that residents have raised have been addressed via engineering checks and/or survey data.
As a result we are moving forward with the pedestrian improvements on Cook Street and Gibraltar Street. These upgrades will improve safety for people walking and cycling, and reduced vehicle speeds.

This project is funded by the Local Board Transport Capital Fund. This fund is used to make improvements based on community priorities, which may not be covered by other programmes of work. The improvements will be delivered by AT on behalf of your local board.

In October 2025 we invited community feedback on our proposal to improve pedestrian safety on Cook St. This survey is now closed and feedback is being reviewed.

About the Project
Howick Local Board has identifiedCook Street and Gibraltar Streetas a location for pedestrian safety improvements. On their behalf, Auckland Transport (AT) is proposing the following
Proposed changes
Install a pedestrian refuge island on Cook Street,
Upgrading the corners on Gibraltar Street with kerb ramps, which help people with strollers or wheelchairs move easily between the footpath and the road.
Relocate the bus stop to increase visibility for drivers and pedestrians
Paint new road markings, including a flush median, and broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times)
Install a new section of footpath to connect the pram crossing on Cook St to Stevenson Reserve
Some on-street parking will be removed to increase visibility for pedestrians
22 on-street car parks will be removed or repurposed to increase visibility for pedestrians
This project is funded by the Local Board Transport Capital Fund. This fund is used to make improvements based on community priorities, which may not be covered by other programmes of work. The improvements will be delivered by AT on behalf of your local board.
