About the project

Help Shape Safer Roads in Your Neighbourhood.

We’re seeking your feedback on proposed changes to improve safety and accessibility at the intersection of Cockle Bay Road, Pah Road, Churchill Road and Shelly Beach Parade.

These changes aim to make the intersection easier and safer for everyone to move through whether you are walking, driving, cycling, or catching the bus.

Why we’re proposing these changes

Currently there are no pedestrian crossing facilities around the intersection and the layout can make it difficult to see and be seen, especially near corners, bus stops and driveways.

This area is busy with people walking, driving, and using the bus, including families walking to the beach.

We have heard from residents and the Howick Local Board that people are concerned about high vehicle speeds, limited safe crossing opportunities, and that turning in and out of side streets can be difficult.

The proposed changes are designed to:

  • Make it safer and easier for people to cross the road
  • Improve visibility for people walking, driving and using the bus
  • Support accessibility for people using prams, wheelchairs and mobility aids
  • Help manage vehicle speeds through this busy location

What we are proposing

Safer crossing points:

New pedestrian refuge islands on Cockle Bay Road (near 98 Cockle Bay Road) and Pah Road (near the current bus stop by 7A Pah Road)

A new pedestrian refuge/splitter island at the Cockle Bay Road / Churchill Road intersection to support safer crossing and turning.

Bus stop relocation:

Moving the bus stop from outside 7A Pah Road to 3A Pah Road to enable the installation of a safe pedestrian refuge island and improve visibility.

New kerb ramps and tactile paving:

New kerb ramps and tactile paving around the new crossing points to support people using prams, wheelchairs, mobility aids and people with low vision.

Red ‘SLOW’ markings:

Red ‘SLOW’ markings on the approaches to the intersection along Cockle Bay Road and Pah Road to remind drivers to reduce their speed.

Tree removal:

Remove the tree outside 7A to fit in the new kerb and crossing layout.

Parking changes:

To make sure the new layout works safely and maintains clear sightlines at crossings, corners and bus stops, a few parking changes are also required.

We are proposing to remove parking in the following locations:

  • 13 spaces on Cockle Bay Road
  • 8 spaces on Pah Road
  • 3 spaces on Churchill Road (near the intersection)
  • 3 spaces on Shelly Beach Parade, close to the bus stop

We have limited the parking changes to areas where they are needed to support safety, visibility and bus movements.

Please refer the drawing for more details.
