Construction Update - 24 Sept 2025

We’ll work in several stages from 1 October September to late November 2025 (weather dependent).

Thanks to the Rodney Local Board Transport Capital Fund and Targeted Rate, the new crossing facilities will prioritise people crossing on Coatesville Riverhead Highway.

What you need to know

Where

308 Coatesville Riverhead Highway to 8 Glenmore Road (see work location map below)

When

From 1 October to late November 2025
  1. Day works: 7am to 7pm
  2. Night works: 8pm to 5am

What we’re doing

This work will deliver:

  • Install a new traffic light-controlled crossing near 308 Coatesville-Riverhead Highway, to prioritise people crossing can be seen by motorists. The lights at the crossing will only stop traffic when people push the button.
  • Upgrade the footpath on either side of the crossing so there’s more room for people to wait to cross.
  • Install high-friction road surface to improve skid resistance ahead of the crossing, paint new road markings, and signs so motorists know they are near a town centre with schools nearby, to slow on approach and to give priority to people crossing the road.
  • Install tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help vision impaired people cross the road.
  • Install a new footpath and 15 parking spaces on Glenmore Road, opposite Safe walking connections in Coatesville, near Lollipops and next to Coatesville Pony Club.

How it may impact you

  • On-street parking will be limited during works. You may need to either park on your property or on a side road and walk to your property.
  • Works will create noise and vibration; we’ll do our best to keep noise levels down.

How travel is affected

  • At times, traffic on Coatesville Riverhead Highway and Glenmore Road will be traffic managed with
    • Stop / Go traffic control
    • Shoulder (side of road) and traffic lane closures
    • Contraflow (a system that allows vehicles to travel in the opposite direction to the normal flow of traffic on a road)
    • Parking restrictions near the work site
    • Give-way traffic control (means you must slow down or stop to allow other vehicles or pedestrians to pass first)
  • Traffic controllers will be on site to assist around the work site.
  • We don't expect much traffic delays, at most 5 minutes as a result of this work.
  • 30km/h temporary speed limit in affected sections during works.
  • Temporary footpaths, ramps, and clear signage for footpath closures and detours will be in place. Access to residential properties will be maintained at all times.
  • On-street parking will be limited during works. Residents and businesses will be notified and alternative arrangements suggested during the works period.
  • Please follow all signs, signals and traffic directions.
  • On this website, a Traffic Management Plan is shared for reference on the type of traffic control measures expected throughout the construction period.

The work we’ll be doing and traffic management & detours

  • We’ll be doing work in stages for approximately 6 weeks. Below are the construction stages:
    • Day Shift 7 am - 7 pm, and Night Shift 7 pm - 6 am.
    • Nightshift work would be kept to minimum, road marking and nearby minor works.
    • Detours are not required as the Traffic Management near the site will be minor, and slower traffic speeds introduced while work takes place near the road.
  • We’ll try to start the work on time but factors outside our control, such as weather could mean a delayed timeline. If the delay is significant, we’ll notify you and update this webpage regularly.
  • Take care while driving, walking, or cycling in the area. Follow all traffic signs, signals, and directions for safety.
  • Driveway and vehicle access to your property could be restricted, while work takes place outside your property. We will personally liaise with effected residents to minimise any disruption. Some footpaths will be inaccessible while the works take place.
  • On-street parking near the intersection will be limited. If your driveway is restricted, you will need to park nearby and walk home.
  • Please plan ahead on the AT mobile app and expect delays.
  • Council waste and recycling collection will continue as normal. If access to your bin collection spot is restricted, our team will assist you with an alternative location.
  • Construction will run between day and night shifts to finish as quickly as possible. We know our work can be a bit loud, and that noise – particularly at night – can be disruptive. We’ll try to keep noise levels down.

Project Update - 18 Sept 2025

We’ve listened to your concerns and changed our designs - shaped by community sentiment. Growing communities means busier roads, so we need to improve crossing facilities and make travelling locally safer for everyone!

We’ll start construction in late Sept 2025 till Nov 2025, on the new traffic light-controlled crossing on Coatesville–Riverhead Highway and parking improvements on Glenmore Road.

We will be in touch with the local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.

Construction includes:

  • Install a new traffic light-controlled crossing near 308 Coatesville-Riverhead Highway, to prioritise people crossing can be seen by motorists.
  • Fix the kerb near parking alongside Coatesville Store, with a flat, accessible footpath.
  • Install tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help vision impaired people cross the road.
  • Install a new footpath and 15 parking spaces on Glenmore Road, opposite Lollipops and next to Coatesville Pony Club

About the project

Heads up! We’ll be improving crossing safety on Coatesville - Riverhead Highway, near the Coatesville shops.

Thanks to the Rodney Local Board Transport Capital Fund, the new crossing facilities will prioritise people crossing, especially our tamariki, and the local community.

Growing communities means busier roads – so we’re working with our communities to make travelling locally safer for everyone!

The changes we were making

  • Install a raised zebra crossing near 308 Coatesville-Riverhead Highway so it's level with the footpath to slow drivers on approach, ensuring people crossing can be seen by motorists.
  • Upgrade the footpath approaches on either side of the crossing, including more room to wait to cross.
  • Painting new road markings, installing signs and beacon lights so motorists know they are near a town centre with schools nearby, to slow on approach and to give priority to people crossing the road here.
  • Install tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers to help vision impaired people cross the road.
  • Additional 15 parking spaces on Glenmore Road, opposite Lollipops Daycare and Coatesville Pony Club.

Benefits to your community

  • Improves your health and well-being – access to schools, parks, public transport and other local amenities.
  • Supports community connections – Shows a commitment to the safety of the entire school community and nearby residents
  • Easier for everyone – Makes it safer and easier for children, their parents accessibility needs to cross safely and enjoy your neighbourhood.
  • Encourages more travel choices – Gives families more confidence to let their children walk, scoot or bike to school, fostering their independence. Getting around on foot doesn’t cost you or the environment a thing!
  • Keep our tamariki safe – Protects students walking to and from school drivers more aware that they need to slow down near schools.
