About the project

Auckland Transport and Eke Panuku are working together on an upgrade of Church Street in Onehunga.

Church Street is important in integrating the soon to be developed Waiapu Precinct, the library and community facilities, and Onehunga Mall. The work will improve the pedestrian experience of the street while supporting and future proofing the public transport experience in Onehunga as a whole.

Recently Auckland Transport informed people of their changes on Church Street, which included extending the bus stop outside the church, adding a new bus shelter, and removing the small island crossing from near the current bus stop.

What we are proposing

Following on from bus stop changes on Church St, we are looking to relocate the existing zebra crossing from outside the Citizens Advice Bureau to outside the library and community facilities building, just adjacent to the end of Gerrard Beeson Place and the ramp up to St Peters Church.

The crossing will be upgraded to a raised pedestrian crossing with lighting. The relocation will see a reduction of parking spaces outside the library by four spaces, with an additional space created outside the Citizens Advice bureau.

The detailed map of the changes can be downloaded from the Documents section of this page.

When

The works are expected to begin the last week of February 2025 and will take around three weeks to complete. This work is typically done during normal working hours

Benefits and impacts

  • The raised crossing will provide for better and safer access the library and Community Centre.
  • The spaces will overall be reduced from nine to five, with parking still available across the road and behind the library.

A shared vision for the future

Onehunga is one of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s earliest settlements. Its vibrant community and central and connected location make it a great place to live, work and invest.

Eke Panuku and Auckland Transport are working on enhancing this iconic neighbourhood as a great place to live, work, play, visit, and do business.
