About the project

We plan to upgrade the Archers Rd & Chartwell Ave intersection in Glenfield to make walking, cycling and driving safer and easier, so everyone gets where they need to and home safely.

We want to support the growing needs of Glenfield, ensuring our roads are prepared for the future and foster a vibrant, family-friendly community.

Why this is important

Improving safety: This intersection has a high number of crashes, making it important to upgrade for everyone’s safety including people walking, cycling and driving.

Lack of safe crossings: Currently, there are no traffic lights or crossings to help people cross the road safely. making it unsafe for the community, especially for children and families accessing nearby schools and parks.

Supporting the Community: The area is busy with nearby schools, parks, and businesses, so these changes will make it easier and safer for everyone to get around and support a liveable, child-friendly neighbourhood.

The changes we’re making

1. New traffic lights and traffic light-controlled crossings on each approach to the intersection:

  • This will help manage traffic on a busy road and gives priority to people on foot

2. Install cycle boxes on each intersection approach:

  • This is a designated waiting area for cyclists at intersections, placed ahead of where motorists stop at traffic lights.
  • It gives cyclists a head start, better visibility in traffic and reduces collisions with turning vehicles.

3. Footpath upgrades

  • Widen the existing footpath on all corners of the intersection, allowing more waiting area for people on foot and ramps for prams or mobility scooters.
  • Tactile pavers (raised yellow bumps on the ground will be installed at all the crossings to help guide visually impaired people.

4. Traffic flow monitoring

  • We’ll keep an eye on traffic flow and traffic light timings will be adjusted as needed to alleviate congestion.
  • The lights at the crossing will only stop traffic when people need to cross by pushing the button.

5. Reallocating road space:

  • To clear access and improve visibility for motorists and people on foot and we need to remove 11 on-street parking spaces
  • Removing these spaces will reduce queueing and congestion for vehicles turning from and onto Chartwell Avenue and allow larger vehicles to turn safely.

6. Removal of one tree on Archers Road.

  • We will plant two new trees at an alternative location nearby to compensate for the lost tree.

7. New signs and road markings

  • New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.
