Auckland Transport is planning to install two new bus layover areas in Canning Crescent, Māngere as a pilot project.

In November 2025 AT introduced a new bus operator in Māngere Town Centre with increased services. Following the full reopening of Walmsley Road, bus routes 309 and 309x will resume starting and ending their trips at the town centre in June. During the peak period, we estimate 14 buses will be required to use Māngere Town Centre area as a layover destination.

Bus layovers are places where bus drivers can safely and reliably park between trips. They ensure drivers can take their necessary breaks and ensure bus services can operate efficiently and reliably.

Currently, there are:

  • 5 layover spaces on Bader Road
  • 4 layover spaces on Court Town Close, with one more to be installed for use during the peak evening period only from 4.30pm-7.30pm

Based on our assessment, we will require 4 to 5 additional bus layover spaces within the wider Māngere Town Centre area.

We have carried out high level optioneering within the area, and initially identified two potential locations:

  • Additional bus layover on Court Town Close, near the residential area.
  • New bus layover on Canning Crescent

Following an internal review, the recommendation is to proceed with the Canning Crescent option, as Court Town Close is within a residential area where on-street parking is particularly important for local residents.

Parking surveys were completed on Canning Crescent as part of the investigation. Parking demand on the southern side was significantly higher. This aligns with expectations, as the southern side contains a higher concentration of businesses and therefore greater employee parking demand. We plan to pilot the new bus layover in areas where fewer vehicles park.

Due to the urgency of providing the bus layover for the 309 and 309x bus services Auckland Transport is proceeding with a pilot involving the installation of new bus layover areas on Canning Crescent.

The pilot

The pilot will run for no longer than two years in order for us to assess the impact on the community and consider feedback from our bus service providers and he community.

It requires:

  • Removal of 21 roadside parking spaces in areas G and E
  • Broken Yellow Lines will be installed at the two Wanstead Way/Canning Crescent intersections and on three bends to ensure motorists can safely manoeuvre at the bends
  • New 'Stop' control line markings at the intersection of Wanstead Way and Canning Crescent intersection

These bus layover spaces will be installed in June.
