Project Update

Update 19 December 2024

Construction started early November 2024

We previously advised that this will be finished by 23 December 2024, but expect to now complete this by 31 January 2025.

This is due to weather delays and the need to do more trenching work after finding unknown underground services during construction.

Please follow traffic management rules and plan ahead.

  • Where: 18 to 50 Candia Road
  • When: 4 November to 31 January 2025
  • Hours of work: 7:30am to 5pm, weekdays

Our work includes:

  • Installing a new footpath from outside #18 to #50 Candia Road
  • Installing new timber retaining wall structures and new kerb and channel that will require tree and vegetation removal
  • Installing new stormwater infrastructure to better manage stormwater flow along the footpath
  • Reconstruct driveways impacted by construction of the new footpath

Update October 2024

We have now finalised the design and will proceed to installing the changes as planned.

We plan to start construction by early November 2024 and will take approximately 7 weeks (weather dependent)

About the project

In March 2023, we asked the community about your thoughts on our proposal to upgrade the footpath from 18 to 50 Candia Road in Swanson. There was a delay in releasing the proposal outcome for the project while we consulted with iwi Te Kawerau ā Maki regarding the proposed removal of a pōhutukawa tree within the project site.

  • The project has been prioritised as part of our wider footpath programme.
  • The proposal aligns with AT’s core values and commitment to promoting walking as a mode of transport. Building a new footpath will improve the overall safety of residents by having a footpath to separate them from traffic and encourage more walking in the area to schools or local amenities on that stretch of road.
  • Due to existing constraints of the road, we can’t widen the existing footpath. It would be expensive and require significant civil works, retaining structures and drainage upgrades. We assure the community this new footpath will provide an important connection for residents on Candia Road.

Outcome of the feedback

  • Thank you for sharing your thoughts. After lengthy discussions and hearing Te Kawerau ā Maki concerns, we have reached an agreement to remove the current pōhutukawa tree and replant a new one in the area.
  • The feedback indicates there are no submissions that would negatively impact the community and this means the work on building the new foothpath will now proceed as proposed.

How this benefits your community

  • Footpaths make it safer for the community by separating motorists and traffic from people on foot.
  • This will also connect people to nearby shops, schools and amenities to get around and enjoy your neighbourhood safely.

What happens next

We will let the community know in advance of any construction taking place. We'll put any changes or updates to the project on this webpage
