About the project
Safety Improvements at the Campbell Road and Rawhiti Road roundabout
We’re proposing safety improvements at high-risk intersections across Auckland to help reduce crashes and make our roads safer for everyone.
The Campbell Road and Rawhiti Road roundabout has been identified as a high-risk location. Based on crash data from 2019 to 2023, it is ranked as the 4th highest-risk intersection in the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board area and the 81st highest-risk intersection in Auckland. During this period, 11 crashes were reported, including one serious-injury crash and five minor-injury crashes. While no crashes were reported in 2024 and one non-injury crash was reported in 2025, the earlier crash pattern shows that safety improvements are still needed.
The current layout can be difficult to use, especially for people cycling or using scooters. From 2019 to 2023, three people cycling were hit by vehicles that did not give way at the roundabout, and one person using an e-scooter was also hit by a vehicle. The proposed improvements are intended to make the roundabout safer and easier to navigate, particularly for people on bikes and scooters, while also creating a clearer, more accessible and better-connected area for everyone who lives, works, visits or travels through One Tree Hill.
What we’re planning to do before June 2027
We are proposing the following safety upgrades at the Campbell Road and Rawhiti Road roundabout:
Install a new off-road cycle path on the Campbell Road north approach to give people cycling a safer space away from general traffic as they travel through the roundabout.
Install a new paired pedestrian and cyclist crossing on Rawhiti Road for better connectivity.
Reconstruct the footpath and grass berm where necessary.
Improve the road surface, signs, and road markings where needed.
Install broken yellow lines (No Stopping At All Times) to keep key areas clear of parked vehicles and improve visibility for people walking, cycling and driving. As a result, 2 parking spaces in the below locations are proposed for removal.
Remove 1 parking space outside 141 Campbell Road
Remove 1 parking space outside 97C Rawhiti Road

How this will benefit your neighbourhood
These improvements are focused on making the roundabout safer and easier for people cycling, while also creating a clearer and more predictable layout for people walking and driving.
Provide a safer off-road cycling connection to help people on bikes move through the roundabout with more separation from traffic.
Make it safer and easier for people walking and cycling to cross Rawhiti Road, while improving visibility and helping drivers better understand the new layout.
What can you influence
We would like your feedback on whether the proposed paired pedestrian and cyclist crossing on Rawhiti Road should be built on a raised safety platform or kept at road level. Community feedback will help Auckland Transport decide which option should proceed.
