Update - 2 April 2026 - Phase 2 details

We’re completing work to rebuild a section of Browns Bay Road, between Beach Road and Knights Road (Phase 2), as part of our regular Summer Road Reno renewals programme.

Our work has been carried out in two phases. Phase 2 is the second and last phase, which requires larger lane closures. Work will take place during the April School holidays coinciding with Easter weekend when traffic is quieter.

Once completed this will make the road stronger, safer, and better prepared for bad weather.

Why two phases?

  • Phase 1: Preparation: Completed in February 2026
  • Phase 2: Rebuild: Full rebuild and resurfacing for a stronger road

This final phase will take place with 24/7 lane closures on Browns Bay Road to deliver these improvements as quickly as possible. Phase 2 includes asphalt resurfacing and will be carried out once the rebuild has been completed.

Update - 2 March 2026

Enabling completed

We have completed the main physical renewal works for this project. A big thanks to everyone in the community for your patience and support to complete this work.

The last phase of this project is planned to be completed in the near future.

About the Project

We’re rebuilding a section of Browns Bay Road between Beach Road and Knights Road, as part of our Summer Road Reno regular road maintenance programme.

  • The last time the pavement foundations were installed on this section of road was in 1997 (29 years ago), where the cement foundations were hoed into existing metal beneath the road surface.
  • This 3-week upgrade will be done in two phases. We’ll be improving stormwater drainage, rebuilding kerbs and footpath, rebuilding the roads foundation, and resurfacing the road.

The Summer Road Reno renewals programme is part of our ongoing investment to maintain and improve Auckland’s transport network, making roads safer, more reliable, and helping to keep Auckland moving.

By upgrading and maintaining roads across the region, we’re making them safer, more reliable, and ready to support our growing city.

Benefits to the Community

  • Safer journeys for everyone
    • A smoother, more reliable road means fewer potholes and safer conditions for all road users – including drivers, cyclists, bus passengers, and people walking.
  • Better stormwater drainage
    • Upgraded drainage systems will help reduce surface flooding during heavy rain, protecting nearby homes, properties, and the road itself.
  • Longer-lasting road
    • By laying a strong concrete foundation beneath the surface, we’re building a road that’s expected to last for the next 20+ years with fewer repairs needed.
  • Environmentally responsible
    • Around 50% of the existing road material will be recycled and reused in other Auckland Road projects, reducing waste and supporting sustainability.
  • Future-proofing for growth
    • Torbay is a growing community. This work helps prepare Glenvar Road for more traffic in the years ahead, keeping the area moving safely and efficiently.

Bus routes

The construction site does not include bus routes travelling through, however, please plan ahead and expect delays with additional vehicles travelling through the detour routes.
