About the project
Bend Treatment Programme
We are proposing to enhance safety at high‐risk bends throughout Auckland.
Auckland Transport has identified multiple sites across Auckland to deliver low-cost solutions to improve safety. These projects comprise a series of cost-effective measures proposed to enhance safety at high-risk bends on Auckland’s rural and urban roads. These safety measures aim to reduce the risks associated with vehicle loss of control, ensuring drivers can safely navigate through these high-risk locations.
What we’re planning to do before June 2027
We are proposing one or more of the following safety interventions:
Install high friction surfacing on the approach to and through the bend to enhance the skid resistance of the road surface.
Install Active Warning Signs (AWS) to encourage safe and appropriate speeds.
Install static signs, road markings, EMP (Edge marker post) and delineations to guide motorists more effectively.
Trim vegetation to improve visibility where required.
The sites included in this work are as follows:
101 Heights Road
Heights Rd EMP
166 Heights Rd
219 Cape Hill Rd
463 Paparata Rd
222 Mahia Rd
302 Massey Road
Gilbert Rd / Bentley Rd
12 Dennis Ave
14 Orly Ave
Favona Rd / Norana Ave
480 Roscommon Rd
232 Monument Rd
Paparata Rd / Pinnacle Hill Rd
Paparimu Rd / Ararimu Rd
Popes Rd / Takanini School Rd
2862 Awhitu Rd
Clevedon-Kawakawa Rd Whitford Point Reserve
You can view the proposed layout in the attached plan.
How this will benefit your neighbourhood
These improvements will make the bends safer and more convenient for everyone.
Better signage and road markings will help road users who are unfamiliar with this stretch of the road to drive to the conditions and manage their speed to travel through the tight curves safely.
Improving the road surface will provide better grip and make the drive through safer and more comfortable.
Overall, the project will improve safety for all users, making it easier to use and better connected for everyone living, working, studying or visiting nearby.
What happens next
We want to hear your feedback on:
Any specific local knowledge, operational issues or suggestions that may help to refine the proposed design.
Please email engagementfeedback@johnstaff.co.nz with the site you would like to share your thoughts on in the subject line.
We would love to hear your feedback up until 29 June 2026.
