Help Make Our Intersection Safer – Upgrades at Beachlands Road and Bell Road
We’re seeking your feedback on proposed changes to improve safety and accessibility at the Beachlands Road and Bell Road intersection.
Following ongoing requests from the local community, we are proposing new pedestrian facilities and safety upgrades to support safer movement through this area.
These changes are intended to make it easier and safer for everyone to get around—whether you’re walking, driving, cycling, or catching the bus.
Beachlands has grown significantly in recent years, and with more people moving around the area, safety at key intersections has become increasingly important.
Currently there are no pedestrian crossing facilities around the intersection and the layout can make it difficult to see and be seen, especially near corners, bus stops and driveways. As pedestrian demand continues to increase along Beachlands Road, the need for safer places to cross has become a clear community priority.
The proposed changes are designed to:
Make walking and crossing it safer and easier
Support accessibility for people using prams, wheelchairs and mobility aids
Improve visibility for drivers with the road signages and markings
Create a more predictable environment for all road users
Support safer bus movements
Support the growing community with future-ready infrastructure
What we are proposing
Safer crossing points:
New pedestrian refuge islands with pram crossings and tactile pavers:
outside 62 Beachlands Road
on Bell Road at the corner near 59 Beachlands Road
New kerb extensions on Bell Road to shorten the crossing distance and help people cross safely in fewer stages.
Improved visibility and clarity at the intersection:
To support the new crossing points and reduce conflict between vehicles and people crossing
Adjust vehicle stop (limit) lines on both approaches of Bell Road to improve sightlines.
New road markings and signage to support the updated layout and guide all road users.
Bus stop relocation:
Move the bus stop by the Beachlands Fire Station to 64 Beachlands Road to enable a pedestrian refuge island and improve crossing visibility.
New kerb ramps and tactile paving around the new crossing points to support people using prams, wheelchairs, mobility aids and people with low vision.
Parking changes:
To make sure the new layout works safely and maintains clear sightlines at crossings, corners and the relocated bus stop, some parking changes are required.
Twenty-one parking spaces around the intersection on Bell Road and Beachlands Road will be converted to no-parking area and marked with broken yellow lines (no-stopping-at-all-times) to maintain visibility and keep crossing points clear.
We have limited the parking changes to areas where they are needed to support safety, visibility and bus movements.
