About this project:
We’re responding to concerns raised by the community to improve crossing safety near 139 Beach Haven Road and provide the community with a safe, convenient crossing option and improving access to bus stops. Thanks to the Kaipātiki Local Board Transport Capital Fund, we are upgrading the crossing facilities on Beach Haven Road. As the Beach Haven community grows, more people are walking to the shops, school, bus stops, and around the neighbourhood.
The changes we’re making in December 2025:
Install a new crossing island with a widened footpath outside 139 Beach Haven Road. The crossing islands are a small section of pavement within the median strip, surrounded by concrete. It helps people crossing to safely wait for a gap in traffic (while giving way to motorists) to finish crossing the road to nearby bus stops.
Slightly relocate two bus stops to make space for the crossing facilities and ensure compliance with design standards as follows
Move bus stop and bus shelter number 4160 from outside 156 Beach Haven Road to 1 John Bracken Way. We will need to clear access and visibility to allow buses to safely enter and exit the relocated bus stop by reallocating road space and removing 4 parking spaces outside 152 Beach Haven Road
Move bus stop 4043 from outside 139 Beach Haven Road to 137 Beach Haven Road. We will need to clear access and improve visibility for drivers and people crossing the road by reallocating road space and removing 2 parking spaces outside 135 Beach Haven Road
Install tactile pavers (yellow guidance marker) at the crossing points to help visually impaired people find their way and safely cross the road.
Install pram crossings, making it easier for people with prams and mobility users to cross.
Install a new stop sign and road marking at the exit of Tramway Road for safe traffic flow at this intersection.
Install slow road markings outside 152 and 147 Beach Haven Road to encourage drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the intersection.
Repaint road marking in the area to clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations.
Paint no stopping at all times (broken yellow lines) to clear access and improve visibility for motorists using this section of the road.
A larger drawing showing the changes can be found to the right of this page.
Benefits to your community:
Improves safety for everyone with different accessibility needs providing a facility to safely cross Beach Haven Road and get to and from the relocated bus stops.
Encourage drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing
The new crossing facilities will give better access and connections to public transport, helping with bus reliability and frequency.
Walking is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.
What happens next:
We will be in touch with local residents before any construction takes place.
Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
