About the project

We’re responding to safety concerns raised by the community about the lack of safe crossing facilities and speed calming measures along Awaroa Road near Sunnyvale Primary School.

Awaroa Road can be busy before and after school, with lots of cars turning and stopping, and students and families walking, scootering, or biking to access the school entrance from Gregg Place. This creates challenges and safety risks when crossing the road.

Thanks to the Henderson-Massey Local Board Transport Capital Fund, we’re making improvements to ensure safety and visibility for everyone.

The changes we’re making

  • Install a new flat zebra crossing outside #18 Awaroa Road to give priority to people, especially children crossing.
  • Install “stay put” school patrol poles and signage at the crossing so drivers know they’re near a school and need to slow down.
  • Install belisha beacon signs by the crossing. These are orange discs which warn motorists they are approaching a crossing, especially at night.
  • Install new pram ramps with tactile pavers on both ends of the crossing. The ramps will make it safer and more convenient for people with mobility needs, those pushing prams or strollers, to cross the road. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance markers at the crossing points to help vision impaired people safely cross the road.
  • Install two new sets of speed cushions outside #20 and #10 Awaroa Road to slow vehicles approaching the crossing to safer speeds
  • Install new signs and road markings so drivers know they are approaching a crossing and need to slow down.
  • Re-allocate road space by removing a total of 3 parking spaces to clear access and maintain visibility near the crossing.

Benefits to your community

  • Makes it safer and easier for children, their parents and caregivers, people with different accessibility needs to cross safely
  • Gives families more confidence to let their children walk, scoot or bike to school, fostering their independence
  • Protects students walking to and from school by slowing down traffic and making drivers more aware that they need to slow down near schools
  • New road markings and signs clarify right of way, improve safety by minimising risk of collisions, and ensures compliance with traffic regulations

What happens next

  • We will install these changes in June 2026.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.
  • We will be in touch with the local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.
